Great Movie Soundtracks There have been some really good movies made over the years (and some bad one's ),but I wanted to know what movie soundtracks were the best in your opinion? What soundtracks were also better than the movie itself? My favorites are of course "Purple Rain," "The Best Man," and "Saturday Night Fever."

Velvet Goldmine. It's the best soundtrack I've ever heard. Glam rock done by the best in the business. Thom Yorke and others are featured.
Garden State. Emoish. But I like it. Trainspotting. Don't know how to describe this. British indie dance? Pulp Fiction. Every selection is perfect. Plus, when you listen to it you can see the movie in your imagination. Wicker Park. This is like a "More Music from Garden State" soundtrack. Boomerang. Great early 90s R & B from the last time I was into it. Empire Records. I love this cheesy movie and the soundtrack reminds me of those salad days. I Am Sam. Great Beatles covers. Romy & Michele's High School Reunion. Great 80s hits. Rushmore. The best Wes Anderson soundtrack. British invasion mostly. [Edited 5/18/06 18:52pm]

I really like the Beverly Hills cop soundtrack. Each song is really well placed in the movie and drives the action forward.

Boogie Nights would be tremendous if it had all the songs from the film. But it doesn't. There are two soundtracks, though.
The Girl Next Door would be a great compilation of mid 90s-now modern rock, if it had all the songs in the film. But it doesn't.

I forgot Donnie Darko! The UK version has all of the songs from the film(unlike the American release). Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen, INXS, The Church, Duran Duran, etc. Definitely in the running for coolest soundtrack ever. [Edited 5/18/06 19:12pm]

The soundtrack for Edward Scissorhands is beautiful!

The Big Lebowski. Spanish "Hotel California" is a must. I got an unofficial version on the Net which features all the songs along with funny quotes. [Edited 5/18/06 19:20pm]

Grease-classic . I played the heck out of my LP back when I got it back when the movie came out. I was rather obsessed with it, actually.

The Russia House -- Branford Marsalis does his THING!
Purple Rain -- duh. Under the Cherry Moon -- double duh. Fame -- Irene Cara. Need I say more? The Fugitive -- James Newton Howard (the man is a genius). Wayne Shorter does this take on the theme that is just magic, too. Batman -- Danny Elfman's best, IMO Star Wars -- John Williams is a genius. Munich -- John Williams does a score that touches upon Jewish folk music. Brilliant.

Very well: Soundtracks: Secret Life of Plants The Big Chill Batman Purple Rain High Fidelity Under the Cherry Moon Pretty in Pink Ragtime The Fugitive Rush Fame Scores: Munich The Russia House The Fugitive Amistad K-Pax Rush

Arguably the greatest soundtrack of any movie of my generation.
This is one of the very best as well . . . and arguably the best cover art of any soundtrack. [Edited 5/19/06 9:19am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016
