Beautiful, Beautiul show. I still can't see how people say negative shit about Oprah. She's done????? Please, she still rules day time t.v. She didn't have to do anything like this. Did you see diamond earrings that everyone got as gifts? I wonder how much money she spent on the whole thing. **************************************************

lilgish said: How the Hell did she get an invite to Oprah's Legends Ball? Ashanti is a cutie pie, no doubt, but talk about sticking out like a sore thumb. I guess Beyonce was busy, well good for Ashanti.
Oprah's "Legends Ball" is a great way to affirm a demographic so often overlooked. I don't think the point is to honor women at the height of their "15 minutes of fame" but is to provide a networking and, by extension, exhortative and mentorship moment for some of the women in attendance. Consider the people honored throughout the year, and consider this event thrown by Oprah. It represents a great opportunity to help groom and affirm black female artists at different points in their careers. I don't think such an effort could be too inclusive or be held too frequently.

It seems Oprah's intentions were to invite the best and brightest. There were no other young pop acts of Ashanti's caliber. She was the least accomplised and talented artist there. I like her, she's beautufil, and Oprah probably likes her, but if your gonna invite Ashanti then there's a long list of Black women who should been invited. [Edited 5/23/06 7:54am]

[Edited 5/23/06 7:54am] I think you might be missing the point of the event. There's a mentoring component to celebrating the legends and pioneers within your community. It falls right in line with rites within African, African-American and other communities. Consider what attending something like that might do for someone such as Ashanti. I'm no fan of her music or her image or her labelmates, but I'm hoping some older entertainer or figure is going to connect with her and invest in her. She's extremely important to younger girls. Her self-esteem impacts theirs. I'm no huge fan of Oprah's show, but I think she should be commended for pulling together a sisterhood event of that caliber. Only Oprah could.

I guess to sort of piggy back on what Threadbare has stated…while Ashanti may have stuck out as a person that some feel didn’t ‘deserve’ to be there but she may be someone who needed to be there. Who knows how that event affected her life as a young woman first and her career choices second. Just being chosen may have impacted her. I can’t imagine what she may have learned that was pertinent to her particular journey. Some people need guidance, mentoring and encouragement and maybe, moreso than some other ladies we can think of, that’s exactly where Ashanti needed to be. Yeah... i was wondering what they were talking about... it look so natural... like this is something they do all the time ..weren't they two in the "youngins'" group that were chosen to read the poetry dedication to the Ledgends at the original weekend brunch? I think I saw a pic of that somewhere last year. It was cute..they looked like 8th graders standing in front of "the congregation" on Mother's Day or something ..very touching, actually

i did. i wonder what they were talking about. by the way, i have a question. why was mariah there? is she a black woman? i'm just confused. also, i wonder if she really appreciated being there because mimi is quite self centred and the furthest thing from being humble and before anyone jumps on my back for saying these things i am a big mariah fan. love the woman but i do have my doubts about her sometimes.

I think that would be a humbling experience for anyone and that includes even someone like Diana Ross. It's one thing to meet a legend or trailblazer. It's another thing to be in a room full of them and from various walks of life. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off
