Going through a Crannberries phase

At first I didn't know what brought this on but I was listening to Howard Stern and he started playing a record from that recording artist that died recently....Sonya? Anyway, she said that she was kind of yodeling and then he started to play the Crannberries "Zombie" next to it and pointed out how the yodeling part was similar. He did laugh at "Zombie" but also said that girl could sing. Well, when I went back to Ann Arbor, I picked up by Cranberries "Stars: Best Of" disc and boy, where there hits great! They had at least one notable hit (IMHO) from every album. Even if a song like "Analyse" didn't shake the world due to the fact that they feel out of favor in the charts in America, it's still so upbeat, catchy and lovely. I even bought the DVD compainion to go with it. Dolores is awesome and really looks hot with the hair blonde and sort of grown out in the "Promises" video. I'm really digging the Crannberries. What is there deal now? Still together? Any hopes for a new album?

Terrific band!

I believe they are no longer together and are each involved in separate projects.

Dolores is supposed to have a solo album coming out in the near future but it's unsure when that will actually happen.

Disbanded in 2001. No plans to reform. Delores has a solo album due out soon. From their official website :

"Dolores O'Riordan had an exclusive talk with Hot Press in Dublin and confirmed that a much anticipated solo album will be released in late spring/early summer 2006! The release of her solo album will also launch a worldwide tour."

If you like the Cranberry's sound you might also be interested in checking out the Mono Band, formed by Noel Hogan (Cranberry's guitarist). Info here http://www.monoband.co.uk/ and http://www.cranberries.ie...l?nav=rdnt and http://www.zombieguide.com/

A fantastic band.

If you liked the later singles, you'll love the albums too.

Most of there output was great, but the album "To the faithful departed" was a dip in form and seemed to kill them off in the public eye.

I highly recommend "Wake Up and smell the coffee" (the last album) and the new remastered extended release of "No need to argue".

Sounds interesting. She soley wrote some great tunes like "Zombie", "Free To Decide" and my favorite, "Analyse" (she appears solo in the video, which I guess was a hint of things to come). They broke in 2001, but there are two new tracks on "Stars", a 2002 release. Maybe they were leftovers. It's dissapointing that they broke up but the solo album could be great and hopefully will be released in America at the same time and not with some bullshit delay.

"When You're Gone" killed my love for them. A beautiful song with a dreadful lyric. She actually sings "everything's stinky". I just cannot allow that.

At their best, they weren't rock. They were pretty.

Yeah, "Salavation" was kind of a distract change in image and sound (that video played a lot but was so fucked up!). I think I'm going to get their boxed set of all their albums (which I think are remastered and have bonus material) up until "Coffee" and then get that one, too. I'm really getting into them.

BTW, I looked them up and was very surprised to see that not even their supposedly huge hits didn't chart because of the stupid rules of the charts (I'm highly assuming that they did not release proper singles). Is there any way to see how their singles did in the UK? Is there any site that lists the chartography by all artists in the UK?

Ah memories, I hated that song with a passion. I used to sing 'Do you have to, do you have to fucking linger'.

Delores was always just a whiny knacker Sinead O'Connor wannabe. biggrin

Sure she was.... Too bad I can name more than three Crannberries songs without having to think about it that much.

I'm not sure why I never got around to delving deeper into them. I have "No Need to Argue", but nothing else. I haven't played it in years....I remember getting it through Columbia House music years ago and wearing it out back then. I'm not even sure if Columbia House is still around. I've always loved "Linger" and "Dreams" too....especially the Celtic version, but never bought that album. I guess it's on my to do list.

Might as well get the greatest hits set, "Stars". And Columbia House apparently folded up a year or 2 ago. No only BMG is around.

Are you inferring that because I made a negative comment that I couldn't name three Cranberries songs, that I'm not into their music, or something like that? If so, I think it's a pretty strange inference to make. I'd hardly have bothered to post the information and links above if I didn’t have at least a passing interest in them.

The smiley faces were meant to indicate humour, it was joke. Well, not really a joke - more of a playful jab at Delores. There is an element of truth to it anyway, I've never liked 'Linger', and if you had had the opportunity to know the Cranberries in their pre-fame days when they went by the name of 'The Cranberry Saw Us', then you'd know that Delores did try desperately to be Sinead O'Connor. She grew out of it though.

I'm sorry and I don't wish to insult anybody on this thread who likes the band, but "Zombie" came recently on some video channel and I couldn't stop laughing - for it was so utterly bad. Especially in today's perspective and what is considered "credible alternative music" these days, but the production, songwriting and the singing were just so otherworldy terrible I couldn't believe my ears. You'd hear that song everywhere back in the day, but my, has it aged badly.

I agree with your comment on Zombie. But What do you understand as "credible alternative music"? Just curious.

Well, I was referring to what the vast majority of the so called "alternative"-listening folks today (2006) would want from their acts, and even what kind of approaches to their favourite bands' images they favour. Of course, The Cranberries did already at their peak get a lot of bad reviews and sheer hatred from music jornalists. They sort of became one of the signature bands on what kind of music, especially the NME / Melody Maker -crowd should "hate" (yeah, those magazines were pretty much instructing their readers on what bands to hate).

Of course, if you ask me personally I don't consider any of the music that gets played on the video channels "alternative" music, but that's just me. What's so alternative about that?

I like Sinead, too. I guess my comment did sound a bit harsh but was also meant in humor. Playful jab at Sinead, if you will. It's not like I ended my post with "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you...Hi Fred".

Her voice was the best thing about the band. No one else sounds like her and I've read other singers who were envious of her voice.
