Summer of '82---What were you listening to 20 years ago?

After reading the A-U-T-omatic thread,it dawned on me that the '1999' album will be celebrating it's 20th Anniversary in a few months. How many of you remember the Summer of '82 and the songs you were listening to back then? I remember watching ALOT of MTV that summer. Here's the stuff that I was listening to...

***"777-9311" The Time
***"Abracadabra"Steve Miller Band
***"Mama Used To Say" Junior
***"You Dropped A Bomb On Me"Gap Band
***"The Walk"The Time
***"Outlaw" War
***"Workin For the Weekend"Loverboy
***"I Ran" A Flock of Seagulls
***"Love Is In Control(Finger On The Trigger)"Donna Summer
***"Hold On" Santana
***"Hard To Get" Rick James
***"So Fine" Howard Johnson
***"Poison Arrow"ABC
***"Cutie Pie"One Way
***"DanceFloor"Zapp
***"Nasty Girl"Vanity 6
***"Caught Up In You"38 Special
***"Only The Lonely"The Motels

Late that summer (August,I think) I heard Prince's new song "1999" on the radio and I was hooked. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before!!

Since I was only eight years old that summer it's hard to remember what i listened to. But I loved elvis "blue suede shoes" and a song that went "im gonna knock on your door (knock knock) ring on your bell (ring ring)..." I wasn't really into prince at that age.
I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

Oh yes,I remember KSOL!! They used to play Prince and his associates like crazy!! Remember when they used to play ENTIRE albums every night at Midnight? I remember on Thanksgiving night (1982) they played the entire '1999' album, then played it again on Christmas Eve '82.That was such an exciting time to be a Prince fan!!

1982 was a good year in music (the first 5 years of the 80's great...the last 5...not so great...IMO). I was a freshmen in high school and their were some songs that were burning up the airwaves. The first two songs in this list were released right before the summer of 82 and they are classics

***Afrika Bambaataa And Soul Sonic Force-Planet Rock...This song truly took world by storm. I remember this song causing a whole lot of talk in the hallways of our high school. Everybody was like..."you heard that new song called "Planet Rock"?. The song monopolized the R&B airwaves the whole summer of 82, it seemed. However...

***Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five featuring Melle Mel- The Message...This song is the TRUTH and changed rap music. Melle Mel and Co relinquish spooky lyrics about the struggle and strife of ghetto living. Chuck D has said that this song had a profound effect on him. The music even details the underlying dramatic desperation of urban/ghetto living. I remember buying this one on 12 inch single in summer of 1982 on Sugar Hill Records. These records were selling like hotcakes that summer. Melle and Co ask the question that I'm sure many people caught living second rate in the ghetto ask themselves..."It's like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under"...Amen brothers. A monumental classic.

***One Way-Cutie Way...A classic example that all of 80's electro/synth funk wasn't bad. This song hits hard and can rock you evn now. Anoterh 80's funk classic.

***Gap Band-Early In The Morning...The Wilson brothers jamming their behinds off. I remember this video as well.
WIth Charlie and Co wearing those white glitter cowboy outfits and those 10 gallon hats on...(LOL)

***Kraftwerk-Numbers...Because of Planet Rock's success, radio stations (here in Atlanta) were starting to play this 1981 song again.

***Jeffrey Osborne- Really Don't Need No Light...Former LTD front man does his thing on the solo tip.

***Ray Parker Jr.-The Other Woman...Brotha Ray went to the top 10 on the pop and R&B charts with this song about creeping with "that other woman". "My friends laugh but that's alright...I may be a FOOL but I know what I like..(LOL). Rat was a specialist at coming up with at least one catchy memorable lines in his songs.

***Xavier- Work That Sucker To Death...Underrated and forgotten about R&B funk track. Bootsy Collins and "Sir Nose" make a special appearance. This song still hits hard and we used to jam hard off of this one at parties.

***Patrice Rushen- Foregt Me Nots...Patrice jamming with a unforgettable funk/R&B track. This song was dominating airwaves back in 1982. This song crossed over to number #23 on the Billboard pop charts in 1982.

***Stevie Wonder- Do I Do...Stevie's "That Girl" was still rocking when in the summer of 82 hit then he released this great song. I like this one better than "That Girl". Stevie love to save this song until near the end of his concerts. I just love the chord changes on this one. I loved the video for this song as well with Stevie out on the dance floor at a nightclub..(LOL) Classic stuff. Jazz legend Dizzy blow a few chords on this track.

***Jennifer Holiday-I'm Telling You I'm Not Going...Stevie's song "Do I Do" stalled at number #2 on the R&B charts for weeks because of this song. And after this song hit, every female here in Atlanta had the urge to sing this song at talent shows...(LOL)

Ok will be back later with top 40 POP songs from 1982.

Excuse me I meant to say One Way-Cutie Pie. Man 1982 was a great year for music, here are some more R&B jams from summer of 82...

***The Whispers - In The Raw

Slave -Wait For Me...Check the long version of this song for some vocal acrobarics from Steve Arrington. Also check Mark Adams turn on bass on the beginning of this track...good 80's funk.

***Junior- Mama Used To Say...Classic song from 1982. Critics were saying that he was Great Britain's answer to Stevie Wonder here in the states..Oh well at least he had this memorable hit. Used to jam hard at parties off of this one.

***Evelyn "Champagne" King-Love Come Down...A hot song that went to number uno on the R&B charts in summer of 1982

***Ray Parker Jr.-Let Me Go...Ray served up a great R&B slow jam in the summer of 82 with this one. Hear one of the greatest lines in R&B music history..."Girl your STUFF is so GOOD...I want MY NAME on it"...(LOL)

***Imagination-Just An Illusion- A lot of people have forgotten about this hypnotic synth jam from mid 82. Great stuff.

***The System- You're In My Sysem...Once again. GREAT stuff. I love this song.

1982 was a year in which alot of important,career-defining albums came out...

***"1999" Prince---This was the album that made Prince a crossover superstar and paved the way for the 'Purple Rain' hysteria that would soon follow.

***"Midnight Love" Marvin Gaye--- "Sexual Healing" was a comeback smash for Marvin.Who knew that this would his FINAL album?

***"Lionel Ritchie" Lionel Ritchie---Lionel had left the Commodores and released his first solo album in fall of '82.Songs like "Truly" and "You Are" became big hits for him.

Avalon - Roxy Music
This Is Radio Clash - The Clash
That Girl - Stevie Wonder
Searching - Change (with Luther on lead vocals)
A Lover's Holiday - Change

The whole Thriller album, but I got tired of it before too long except for Human Nature.

Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) - P
All The Critics - P
Delirious - P
LRC - P
Let's Pretend We're Married - P

'Tho i wasn't even born durin' '82...was two years later...
but 1982 had some of the best songs i've ever heard...
like the whole synth thing...Prince's "1999" really sounded like somethin from '82...with all that synth goin' on...stuff by Toto...even the piano ballads from '82...or the early eighties were fantastic..."I Won't Hold U Back"...really liked the synth sound of the late 70's and early eighties...Michael Mcdonald comes 2 mind...
