Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney and his wife Heather Mills are to separate after four years of marriage.
A statement said the couple had "found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives".

Sir Paul and Mills, a former model, married in June 2002. They had a daughter, Beatrice, a year later.

They met in 1999 through Mills' work for her charity, launched after losing a leg in a motorbike accident in 1993.

Recent reports suggested they had been living at separate addresses.

Sir Paul, 63, was said to be living on the family farm in Peasmarsh, East Sussex, while 38-year-old Mills was reportedly at the couple's home in Hove.

But Mills last week told one newspaper: "It's hilarious. Of course we are together.

"Paul and I are still very much together. Paul and I are together 100%."

Lavish

The couple have appeared together at public engagements this year, protesting in Canada in March against the slaughter of seal pups and in a BBC documentary last month on the fur trade.

The pair were married in June 2002 at the 17th Century Castle Leslie in Glaslough, County Monaghan, Ireland.

The 1,000-acre estate was transformed with the erection of three marquees and a specially-constructed covered walkway between them and a church within the grounds.

A dance floor was constructed alongside a lake, and a pier built with a luxury boat moored alongside.

Nine coaches and a helicopter brought some 300 guests to the event, which was shielded from the media by a team of security staff.

The couple had kept the wedding date and venue secret, but the castle owner inadvertently dropped hints.

Sir Paul later revealed the venue was chosen because his mother had been born in County Monaghan.

Mills has endured repeated press criticism since the wedding, including claims that she influences her husband's decisions on everything from his appearance to his work.

Sir Paul has also refuted claims of a rift between his wife and his children.

Fortune

Sir Paul has been world famous for five decades following the global success of the Beatles in the 1960s.

He received a knighthood in 1997's New Year honours.

The musician is worth an estimated £800m, and Mills has revealed in the past that he turned down her offer to sign a prenuptial agreement to protect his fortune.

Sir Paul was previously married to Linda Eastman from 1969 until her death in 1998 from breast cancer, and it is said that they spent only one night apart.

The couple had three children - musician James, photographer Mary, and fashion designer Stella. Sir Paul also has a stepdaughter, Heather, from Linda's first marriage.

Mills formed the Heather Mills Health Trust, recycling prosthetic limbs and campaigning against landmines, after being hit by a police motorcycle as she crossed a road in 1993.

She is now founding patron of UK charity Adopt A Minefield, along with her husband, and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996.

This is sad, but after the visceral lyrics on Riding To Vanity Fair from Chaos And Creation In The Backyard, it doesn't come as any great surprise.

I have no idea what they have gone through, so I'm in no place to judge, but it seems to me that if my wife and I had constant intrusions into our lives, we'd become closer rather than further apart, since she's the only other person who would understand what's happening. But hey, my wife and I have been through a lot, and I think that's a particular strength of ours, which we've been blessed with. It's just sad to see that someone I respect in many ways is giving up on someone who was so important to him just a few years ago.

oh please the breakup is simple....Heather just isn't and never will be Linda...the love of his life.

Linda & Paul were never as tight as it appeared either - very much the opposite I know someone who used to be on security at their home and they lived very nuch separate lives too!! and Stella was a rotten lil' whore too - when she was grounded to the estate she used to threaten the security that she would tell her dad that they had touched her up if they wouldnt let her off the grounds!!

I recently read in Bebe Buell's book (not that everything she says is gospel anyway ) BUT she said that she was hanging out with Linda one time in the mid 70s and for some reason Linda admitted that she was a total whore back in the day. (they were talking about the double-standard thing as far as sex goes) That she slept with everybody I guess. Well, I guess everyone did that back on the scene in those days. It just surprised me because Linda always seemed so wholesome to me.

Not to talk shit about the dead or anything. This is just something I read recently.

What press? I've not seen or heard anything about their marriage since they had the baby, who's pretty much been completely left alone by the press. Any publicity they do get that I hear of is when they're courting it themselves.

McCartney's wealth was estimated at $1.5 billion by the Sunday Times in their annual list of Britain's richest people. The couple are believed not to have a prenuptial agreement.


Speculation immediately arose about the size of a possible settlement, with lawyers estimating Mills McCartney's share of the former Beatle's fortune at between $188 million and $376 million.
