In Jimmy Page's case, some of the songs he played on-stage required a 6-String and a 12-String part (Such as "Stairway")

Micheal Angelo is the only cat I ever saw (play live) and actually use all 4 necks. He played both necks at the same time giving him all kinds of double harmonies.

And you beat me to it. nod

He got his made for him so he could play "Stairway" live. And also to play "The Song Remains the Same", and then afterward "The Rain Song" on the six-string, which was a different tuning.

clarification edit

And yes, sometimes they are used just for show, like with Daft Punk's "Robot Rock"....

Chicago blues great Earl Hooker was one of the original doubleneck guys, I BELIEVE he was one of Jimmy Page's inspirations. You want doublenecks? YOU GOT IT!
Check out the page, Earl hooker is there.

Nice thread, pill. How in the hell did I not see this?! Ever since I was little, I ADORED double necks. The first cat that I saw with one of couse, was Page. Then Sugarfoot from Ohio Players, then Paul Stanley from KISS. Bootsy used a double neck guitar/bass which is HELLA cool. I actually seriously thought about trying to get a double neck guitar/bass to play live when I was having problems finding the right bassist to play live in my band. I would play the bassline parts and when it came time to play my leads, I would just switch! Of course, the price for a double neck guitar/bass double neck is through the roof. But, I swear to GOD, one day, I'm so going to do that. I've always loved double necks> I just asked Page if I could have his backup Gibson SG double neck in "The Rain Song" thread!
