Dita didn't patent that look. She stole it from every Vargas girl there ever was. But then, you knew that I'm sure. I can't believe I even checked this thread, and then also clicked on every image as well. She is supposedly about voice but she wants people to focus on more.... why i have no idea. She sells sex. Shakira sells sensuality and using your body as a canvas for expression in a way known as dancing. She really gets into the musica. The other doesn't even when singing a lot of the time. Her performance with herbie was all about vocal acrobatics. She started well for the first 30 seconds or so but after that, vocal gymnastics. [Edited 5/17/06 1:33am] You mean Christina's grammy(?) perfrmance of "singing This Song For You"?...She looked great and did all of the vocal acrobatics we know she can do, true....but what struck me most about that performance is that she was not 'paying attention' ...jazz music is entirely different from pop in that the vocalist, using her voice as an instrument, is actually part of a musical conversation with those playing the other instruments...it's about listening, sharing, connecting...she was so "outside" of the conversation taking place amongst the others, most of the jazz musicians I know, including my old dude who's even had Micheal Brecker as a sideman in one of HIS bands, were disappointed Aguilera performance...right until maybe the last 16 bars when a lightbulb finally went off in her head and she started to "engage"...THIS was when I looked up and said, 'okay, so maybe there might be someting to this new jazz schtick she wants to do after all' .... ...however, no matter how much Christina kills when she sings pop and contemporaray r&b live, I am of the opinion that Miss Lady would do well to go back and maybe watch clips Nancy Wilson's live version of "Singing This Song.." at any number of jazz festivals through the years... Anyway, they (Christina, Britney and Shakira) were/are all selling sex. The only difference is that Christina is the only one who can actually sing..."vocal acrobatics" or not. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here we can all start to define singing. There is singing with notes etc and then there is singing that isn't about the notes, not about how many notes one can hit but has the emotion. | |
