I don't really know her music, but she is coming to Belgium in May. She is getting raving reviews and we're gonna check it out.

Have to admit I only listened to it once, and I wasn't convinced at first listen, but since all topics around here are about either Madonna or MJ I think at least it desreves a place on top, so there it is...

By the way, did you check the new Candi Staton ???
You might like that one as well, I know I did!

I know one song “I'd Rather Be An Old Man's Sweetheart (Than A Young Man's Fool)” from a Soul-compilation. Great song, don't know any of her other stuff. I didn't even know she still made records.

Huh? I know Lisa Coleman is on it. I've never heard of Wendy playing organ/keys on anything before. I'll have to look at the liner notes again.

Wendy IS on a track or two, isn't she? I know a few folks from the Girl Bros. gang show up on the album. Regardless, it's good stuff. I like her.

Detroit native Bettye LaVette is a soul singer best known to collectors of rare 45s (she had a couple of hits in the '60s) and Broadway-bound theater goers (she starred with Cab Calloway on the Great White Way for several years), but this CD should erode her obscurity. The title of I've Got My Own Hell to Raise comes from the Fiona Apple song "Sleep to Dream," which LaVette recasts here with righteous anger. All these songs were written by women, including Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann. Helmed by Joe Henry, it's the perfect marriage of contemporary material with sparse, Stax/Volt-style instrumentation. And Henry's economical production allows LaVette's rapacious growl to rip.

I thought that lyric sounded familiar biggrin I have got to hear this nod

I dig her voice, the pace throws me a bit - I wish she'd kept it slower so she could elaborate... she sounds like she's rushing... but I'm curious about the rest of the album smile
