Bring Back Club MTV!!! (And BTW, Whatever Happen To Downtown Julie Brown?)

If MTV really wanted to redeem itself, they could bring THIS show back.

Dance music is much need in USA right now.

And where is THIS woman:

Wubba-wubba-whatEVeR about Downtown Julie Brown (yeah, you knew that was coming...)

But I agree, MTV needs to embrace pure dance somewhere in its programming. There used to be shows like the one you mentioned along with AMP back in 1997 which was in tandem with the "Electronica" craze/hype/fad of that period (and you had darker, more UK-flavoured dance music that a lot of Americans simply couldn't digest, you had to be a dancehead or underground to appreciate it).

MTV needs some kind of mainstream-ized dance show (or sh*t a DANCE CHANNEL). Also, the MySpace generation needs to be exposed to some pure dance. Play some Les Rythmes Digitales, Annie, Sophie Ellis Bextor, hell, even Cascada (I don't care, whatever it takes to get dance music on the channel). Bring some balance back. They could even relegate it to MTV2 and I'd be alright with that.

America needs to dance again and wave a glowstick around. Loosen the fuck up.

I saw her a while back on a reality show, along with Stuttering John & J-Ho's ex-husband. IMO, she aged badly.

I'm kinda sad that most people here are giving more of a fuck about the whereabouts of Julie Brown than the direction of dance music. lol

Pure dance music is one reason why I miss Club MTV.

Also, people knew how to dress first-class on the show. I give some credit to hip-house for that.

Remember when MTV2 had MTV2 Dance on Friday nights which was 3 hours of all dance music? I guess it wasn't pulling in enough ratings. Does Eletric Circus still come on Muchmusic?

I used to watch it every now and then also. They couldn't do the show any more these days because there ain't no dance music on the charts. They would need to play something deep from the underground. That would be a good idea though. It might bring dance music back to the charts and run all this midtempo bullshit out of style.

Here in Europe there's an underground scene which plays funk-garagehouse .
Yeah i know .... house , but it's far more funkier then you would think .
And there's some s-e-r-i-o-u-s slappin bass in some tracks .
IMO garagehouse has grown through the years ( more music instruments / etc ), and as funkaddict i'm blown and in awe sometimes by those infectious grooves .

I love house music. In the early 1990s, that's all I listened to until it turned into techno or trance which was actually too fast.

I think Saturday Night Live has a recurring sketch called "Deep House Dish" which is supposed to be about dance music which runs on an fictional MTV4 channel. Maybe MTV should flex its digital cable muscle and make it real. They already have MTV Hits, MTV Jams, MTV en Espanol; why not MTV Dance? Or it could be VH1 Dance, since they have VH1 Classic, VH1 Country, VH1 Soul, and VH1 Mega Hits (rock and alternative).

BTW, why do all VH1's networks have the number one in them? VH1 originally stood for Video Hits One, so shouldn't the other networks be VH2, VH3, VH4 and so forth? hmmm

Also BTW, I remember seeing a documentary in MTV a few years ago about their original veejays, and they interviewed Downtown Julie Brown. They asked her why she posed nude for Playboy, and I liked her honesty and candor about the subject. She said that she could have told people that she did this to express her sexy side or to empower women about free expression, but she basically said that Playboy offered her a lot of money and that she had a mortgage to pay.

I think I remember that MTV2 show you're talking about. It used to come on around 2001 -- I remember seeing Kylie's "Cant Get You Out Of My Head" (wow, it's been so long since we've had a dance hit like THAT on the US pop charts). MTV2 does have a show called "Subterranean," haven't seen it, but it's a mixture of indie and dance and electronic-flavored music.

I rarely watch MUCH anymore since my cable company stopped subscribing to it. That was a good channel. Found out about The Streets through them.

Where in Europe do you reside? I know in the UK, the Grime scene is making a lot of noise; and that's an off-shoot of UK Garage, house, hip hop and 2-step. Lady Sovereign, Roll Deep and Riko come to mind.

nod Yeah, there's definitely a market for it. I don't see why Viacom doesn't try to capitalize on it.

Yeb , the UK is one of the main influenced areas where i hear those new sounds ( UK internet radio )
Also , i dig the breakbeat-movement from West London with heavyweights like Agent Kaidi Tatham , Nathan Haines , etc ....

I'm still interested in seeing how far Grime will progress. Will it flourish and take Garage to the next level or will it turn creatively-stagnant like Reggaeton has in the States.
