Vai and Malmsteen are def. two of the best rock guitarists there ever was. There are three guitar players that have revolutionized the way we view how to play the rock guitar more than others: 1. Jimi Hendrix - the most innovative rock guitarist ever! 2. Eddie Van Halen - he took the rock guitar to new technical hights in the late 70s. 3. In the beginning of the 80s came Yngwie Malmsteen. His fast picking style, classical influences from Bach and Paganini mixed up with bluesy feeling ala Hendrix and Blackmore was something completely new to the guitar community. No one can deny the impact he had and his albums with Alcatrazz and his first three solo albums were incredible when it comes to guitar playing. Never before had any rock guitarist showcased such technique and unlike all the neo-classical shredders that followed in his foot steps Yngwie actually had a lot of feeling and soul. His violinlike vibrato with incredible sustain has never been repeated by any other guitarist I've heard. Unfortunately the Yngwie that rocked the world until 1987 does no longer exist. After a serious car accident which resulted in coma for one weak and severe nerve damage in his right arm he has never been able to recapture his greatness. Nowdays he plays fast but has lost much of his clean technique and he repeats himself too much and doesn't seem to put the music first anymore... | |
