That's so funny and TRUE! I always think of that album as having a Cher vibe, especially with that giant hair she had going at the time. "The Dancer" in particular is very, very Cher-like. I heard that Cher's next album is supposed to be a bluesy rock album. She should cover Peej.

polly's everything!!!
this record was , in my opinion overrated by critics and underappreciated by fans. she rocks it live though. i saw her on her last tour and she played 'Whores Hustle' and something else from this cd and they lost nothing in the performance. in fact she rocked them up a notch because they left the atmospheric keyboard stuff off. blabhblah I love Polly, she's one of my absolute FAVS!! See, that's where she kinda lost me. I got it the day it came out, but have hardly ever played it. Same with Desire until last year. I was a huge fan of her first 3 albums, but for awhile there I couldn't keep up with her. I should revisit it now to see what I think of it.

this record was , in my opinion overrated by critics and underappreciated by fans. Totally agree. I've learned to like it, but there is something about the production that leaves me cold, not sure whether it's the polish. My fave's always been "Desire" too. It really fit that bleak winter mood in NY. [Edited 5/13/06 10:04am]

See, that's where she kinda lost me. I got it the day it came out, but have hardly ever played it. Same with Desire until last year. I was a huge fan of her first 3 albums, but for awhile there I couldn't keep up with her. I should revisit it now to see what I think of it. You know how I feel about Desire. That album is an epiphany for me. I had never seen Dance Hall at Louse Point until Stories was released and when I went to grab a copy of Stories I was like what's this. I had never even heard of it So I had 2 distinct listening experiences going at the same time. And I thought, damn I totally missed the album after Desire and then upon further investigation I saw that Louse Point was released before Desire and then it all made complete and perfect sense to me. Louse Point (I had thought it was Louise for the longest time.... ) ....Louse is the bridge between her past work and Desire. You can hear echoes of albums like Rid of Me and Love but you catch glimpses of the future that is Desire. Bridge Crossing Over..... That is an amazing amazing song..... And I dreamt of running.... And in the dream I myself could run...And I feel the ground beneath my feet...And I move like music, You move me, like music... Many fans were lost on Desire. One comment I distinctly remember in connection to that album was "PJs new style of singing", trading in her "Tarzanic" shreiks (thanks Anx ) for subtlelty, which in actuality is a whole new benchmark of strength for an artist that became known for her mad operatic style. Desire is emboldened in it's expression because she chose a different way to approach these deep, dark, rich and tragic tales. I wonder how I would have received Desire had I heard Louse first. I loved all of PJs early works but for me it was so exciting to see her branching out into a totally different road with Desire and I don't know....there is something magical about that album. The fact that it's almost a decade since it's release and I still find it a mystery makes it that much more appetizing to me. I have heard that many of the songs are based on actual stories but I will probably never read those stories because I prefer these songs to be defined within my own mind's eye Listened to Stories all weekend and this album is still rockin. Horses in My Dreams is my favorite for the salvation factor. I thought of Moonbeam when I heard We'll Float That's what I love about all these discussions because I think of certain people when I hear certain songs/albums. I think of Gangsta when listening to choirgirl I hope all this discussion sparks some to go back and revisit this album .
