i thought 'to bring you my love' was plenty polished, and i still loved it. i didn't like 'songs from the city' very much, because it wasn't the PJ i liked. her first three albums were so over-the-top and aggressive and campy and mad (in both definitions of the word), and then this somber little thing (relatively speaking) comes out and she's all excited to tell us about how cool it is to live in new york city, when at the time this album came out, i was FED UP with living in new york city ....i was a little sour to this album.
maybe now if i gave it another chance, i'd like it.

Picking favorites for anything is hard for me I'm really drawn to that side of her and those 2 songs are excellent examples, although for me Leah would be a better pick. Did you see her walkin? Did she come around here sir? Black Hair Brown Eyes....my beautiful Leah She was always so needing said "I have no one" even as I held her....she went out looking for someone looking for someone, looking for someone She only had nightmares and her sadness never lifted and slowly over the years her lovely face twisted did she come around here sir? She had a couple of short songs on Is This Desire. Really that whole album is kinda moody and dark.....like "Joy"....the way she sings (or screams) in it makes me wanna cry. The live version of it sounds completely different from the album version though. It sounds almost like a grunge version. I don't know. I never got the sense that she was laughing at her own melodrama. Some of her early shit really gives a sense of desolation. I never really viewed Stories the way you did and thank God I didn't overanalyze it cuz I would have missed out on something wonderful. Desire is my favorite just because of the moodiness of it but there was something wonderful about her being a regular girl for a minute That's how I saw it anyway. And she had already established that she was not about any of the things you loathed about what you saw her as with this album. You should cut the girl a little slack . And she had already established that she was not about any of the things you loathed about what you saw her as with this album. You should cut the girl a little slack I think it just depends. Early songs like "Dress", "Sheela-Na-Gig", "50 Foot Queenie" and "Me Jane" are loads of fun. They're loud and fast, but not tortured. Stuff like "Legs", "Rub Til It Bleeds", "Hair" and a few others appear anguished, but the subject matter is almost hysterical once you dig into it. I mean, the whole Samson & Delilah thing in "Hair" totally cracks me up. She definitely had a sense of humor along with all the seriousness. But then there's stuff like "Oh My Lover", "Missed", "Hardly Wait" and "Ecstasy" that truly are pained and exposed. I think she really loved fucking with conventions of storytelling, gender, feminism, and even alternative angst at that time. You didn't really know what to make of her, but I can see both sides of what you guys are saying. She seemed like the most hardcore rocker bitch and the most sarcastic smartass at the same time. This really came across in her documentary "Reeling" from '94. "To Bring You My Love" on the other hand was a way for her to distance herself from the personality she had cultivated. She seemed like she was playing a character. And although the material she had at that time was even darker and freakier than what came before, it felt like she was playing dress-up. I know the look and the sound are nothing alike, but I think of this as being like her Ziggy/Aladdin Sane period. PJ appeared to live this exotic, decadent life, when really it was just her character's interpretation of this. I didn't take it too seriously.

In all fairness, the first thing I heard by her was "Rid Of Me" and it scared the shit out of me at first. The Steve Albini production, the concrete block power chords, her maniacal singing, the album cover...it all rubbed me the wrong way. A few months later, I was at one of her gigs and became a fan for life. I love it when she's abusively hard.
