I used to not like the man myself. But one day I heard me some Elvis and I liked what I heard. Suspicious Minds! I don't think it's a personal hatred towards Elvis my friend. I think it's just he's been overhyped through out the years... A good singer?? Some good songs?? 'Blue Suede Shoes' is my favorite.. But he's very overrated.... I tried my best not to reply to this thread.. But I could'nt resist...

You did it again! The question should be: Are MJ and/or Elvis as good as Prince? Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Bo Diddy, Lil Richard, Chuck Berry, and others were doing Rock and Roll before anyone ever HEARD of Elvis, yet he "invented" Rock and Roll. Fast forward.....Eminem is the number 1 selling rapper yet it's been around years before anyone ever HEARD of him. See a pattern? I do. A simple question was asked and I gave my opinion. I simply stated that Prince is a much better musician, but Elvis has a more loyal and adoring fan base. If you wish to turn this into another race thread, this is your perogative. My friend, you are extremely naive. You take every form of black music and you see white people colonising it, getting rich off it and outselling the original black artists (usually by doing inferior versions of it). Reggae-UB40, Disco- The Bee Gees, Hip Hop-Eminem,Beasties. To this day people still call Elvis The King Of Rock n Roll and sometimes even the inventor of it. If you seriously don't see what an insult this is to black people and their achievements then you know nothing about musical history. Fortunately most orgers are smart enough to know that history is often written by the dominant groups in society. In this case white non musicians. Thank god not everyone wants to sweep this under the carpet. As for comparing him to Prince or even Michael I think other orgers have pretty much said it for me. Elvis was a good looking boy with an okay voice who was in the right place at the right time. Some people are born great, others achieve greatness and others (Elvis) have greatness thrust upon them.

Most orgers seem to already know the score though so it's cool. Hope I didn't offend you but it's impossible not to mention race when talking about Elvis's career.

I think Elvis is amazing for his iconic status. In the end, that makes him a legend. But I dont think he was terribly talented. His voice was, at best, just passable. Also, he was more of an entertainer than a musician.
Im not slagging on him. I think that, without Elvis, rock and roll wouldnt be what it is today. There would be no Beatles, no Rolling Stones, hence alot of other great bands not coming to fruitation. But he wasn't a great musician. Thats why when I hear that Madonna is Elvis incarnate, I dont doubt it. Both are humongous pop culture icons whom were great entertainers. In 100 years, both will probably still be remembered(though I may be exaggerating). As for comparing Elvis to Prince, Prince has the upper hand musically. He, however, will never be the pop icon Elvis is. MJ is more comparable to Elvis than Prince is, but lately MJ's resembling Elvis in his WORST years.

Is Pepsi "better" than Coke?
Is McDonald's "better" than KFC? Is Prince "better" than Elvis? My answer... no.

Is McDonald's "better" than KFC? Is Prince "better" than Elvis? My answer... no. McDonalds Vs. KFC; and Pepsi Vs. Coke cannot be judged in the same way as comparing two flesh and blood, music artists....It's one thing to say for example that I like the group Kiss better than Led Zeppelin; It would be in my personal opinion and rights to make such a from-the-heart statement...BUT!!!! It's a whole other ballgame, however, to say that Kiss is musically and artistically better than Led Zeppelin... That's what people are getting at...Prince is not on the musically iconic level of Elvis for the obvious social and historical reason I care not to dwell on; But he towers over the man talent wise; it just can't be debated...We are not talking about who you like "more"...we are talking about who has the superior overall talent... Musician-wise - Prince makes Elvis his bitch. Plain and simple. No argument can be made.
Popular-wise - I think it'safe to say that the white guy will ALWAYS win out against another black artist in these types of comparisons. Overall Talent-wise - Prince again makes Elvis his bitch. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

Elvis is twice the singer, performer and interperator that Prince has ever been. Not to mention he is more diverse in the styles he can pull off.
But that will be my final post in this thread as I have no intention with arguing these points with people who really don't know all that much about Elvis to begin with. Good day

Have you seen the 68 Comeback special? He plays decent guitar on that. He also produced most of his own songs. Phil Spector considered Elvis one of the best producers in music at the time. [Edited 5/9/06 23:15pm]

[Edited 5/9/06 23:15pm] Elvis was an electrifying performer and as huge an icon as you can get; But he wasn't producing his own music...nor was he writing it...But again, the man is an icon...No need to make the man into something that he wasn't....
