Maybe the title of this thread should have a disclaimer, musically-speaking, is Michael Jackson capable of a comeback. Everyone is going to have an opinion about his eccentricity, image, legal troubles, etc., but I wonder outside of all that is Michael Jackson capable of a comeback based upon his music alone.

This type of thread just turn into the same old discussion, argument, about everything concerning Michael, but his music.

Just an idea.

But you see, you can't have one without the other because his personal problems are a BIG part of his musical problems. You will NEVER be able to separate MJ the singer from the molestation and freaky behavior. Never.

I've been goofin around already all day, so I might as well goof around some more. I'm going to take a stab at it. I agree though that we can't really separate the person from the artist because one affects the other;however, for the sake of argument, I'm going to leave the child molestation allegations and the plastic surgery out of it at least.

I know his fans are going to jump on me, but I don't think that Michael could make a genuine comeback. It's as if he is stuck in time... so that's where his fixation on the past comes into play. I think Michael would be a little like Austin Powers... trying to come back after being so far removed. Plus Michael just doesn't seem to be a musician... more of a performer/vocalist???? That's where Prince, Sting, Bonnie Raitt.. all of those legends have the advantage over pure pop artists. They are first and foremost musicians. So for them, their success in their mind doesn't necessarily hinge on record sales where as for someone like Michael and apparently his fans, sales count for everything. Prince, Sting, Bonnie, Susan Tedeschi and more just derived this pleasure from the process and working with the band. It doesn't seem like Michael "gets into" that.

THIS IS PURE SPECULATION AND CONVERSATION. I don't know the guy. I'm just conversing.

Well ya know... I'm entering what I KNOW to be heated discussions. lol lol

Also I don't really post that much on this part of the forum. I usually post in the Pol./Rel section, so I am proceeding with caution. This is new territory for me.

Yeah, you seem to be intellectually a cut above some of the other posters here. Good to have someone with a sense of perspective around. I namechecked you on that Madge thread if you care to read it. I think I'll be staying away from those kind of threads in future as I was always feel like a grown up arguing with children.

I'm far from being the most prolific poster on this site, but I've been here long enough to recognize a troublemaker that stands out. Prince.org is a relatively peaceful web community all and all, and compared to many other web communities slandering and name-calling is actually a very rare phenomenon here. Your posts have been less than sophisticated by their tone and content. Somebody will take you out on that and usually for a reason, so don't whine if people are criticizing your behaviour.

Yeah... I just think people are very emotional when their music idols are criticized. It's nearly like attacking a member of the family because these artists affect us so personally--maybe have some significance to an event or events in our past. That's why I try to be very respectful of fans. I don't want to criticize an artist repeatedly within a discussion. I just want to make my point, whether or not anyone agrees with it. The same is true of my support of artists as well.

Please, save your little "Oops, he got me good, I better try and get him back" post for someone who cares. All someone has to do is go back and read who fired the first shot and that, my "Org Regular" friend, would be you. Don't start any shit and you won't have to worry about getting it right back in your face. Simple as that.

You decided to go after someone and now you're upset that that person was able to bang back on you. Now, let it rest and leave it alone. We're donw with this.

Yeah, but MJ fans always seem to have to make it a point to show up and defend him as if he pays them to do so. MJ fans, by FAR, are the most temperamental of any fan.

So true. I have come to accept just as MJ as changed so much over the years so has his fanbase. The fanbase MJ had circa 79 is completely different to what he has now. The ones that I truely believe are delusional are those who believe that somehow or another he can do another "Thriller".

Good album, good videos (unlike the crap from Invincible), some good performances (maybe a tour). That would be a great comeback IMO.

There were actually 2, but I guess Cry doesn't really count. The answer is basically that MJ was feuding with Sony at the time.

Well obviously not. I'm looking at what I said and what you said afterwards and the only thing I can come up with is that you were insinuating that he has to outsell Thriller in order for any comeback to be successful. If that's not what you meant then I honestly have no idea what you were talking about.
