The Essential Jacksons---anybody got this one?

Enjoy Yourself (Extended Version)
Show You The Way To Go
Goin' Places
Find Me A Girl
Blame It On The Boogie
Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)
Lovely One
This Place Hotel
Can You Feel It
Walk Right Now
State Of Shock (with Mick Jagger)
2300 Jackson Street
Nothin (That Compares 2 U)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (live,1981 US tour)

I've been looking for a good Jacksons compilation and I think I'm gonna get this one.I already have the Jackson 5 stuff, now I need some of their latter material and this looks like a decent set.A few questions...

***Does it include the long, extended version of "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)"? I'm talking about the disco 12" version, which absolutely puts the album version to shame!

***Besides "Enjoy Yourself",are there any other extended versions here?

***I'm sure this has been discussed before, but why is "Heartbreak Hotel" now titled "This Place Hotel"? confuse What's the story behind that?

***Does this set include some good liner notes? I like compilations that have thorough,well-written liner notes.

Hey there - I'm just going to repost what I wrote about the album when I first got it. BTW, "Heartbreak Hotel" was renamed "This Place Hotel" because MJ/CBS didn't want people thinking MJ was covering the Elvis tune.

With that said, the remastering has made such a huge difference. I never paid much attention to "Enjoy Yourself" or "Goin Places" before but after listening to these songs on this CD, I've developed a new appreciation for them. Same goes for other tracks on the album: "Lovely One", "This Place Hotel", "Find Me A Girl", etc. I've heard these tracks before but didn't really consider them to be too appealing since they didn't match the brilliance of MJ's eventual solo work.

How wrong was I.

Since the sound quality is so drastically improved on The Essential, I'm finally appreciating the material for how good it really is.

For those who haven't picked up the album yet, I highly recommend you do. The CD booklet is not extensive but does include all the Pop/R&B chart peaks of each song, an introduction written by Jermaine Jackson (taken from the 2100 Jackson Street album), as well as a great picture of the Jackson brothers during their mid-70's heyday.

My only disappointment is that my two favourite Jacksons' tracks ("Push Me Away" and "That's What You Get For Being Polite") weren't included. However, since they weren't released as commerical singles, I guess it's understandable.

I believe the version of "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)" is the album version. Where can I find the 12" Disco version???

I have this CD as well. My favorite cuts are, Enjoy yourself, Nothing that compares to you, and Let me show you the way to go. Incidently, the reason why the changed the name of "Heartbreak Hotel" to "This place, Hotel" was because Elvis' estate had threaten to sue Michael if he did not change the name. Him covering the song had very little to do with it.

I never heard that one before eek They never threatened Whitney... and erm, why would they do it way after the song was a single? It was only really changed on the album sleeve around 1984.

Hey don't kill the messenger. This is what I read a few years ago. My guess is that copyright laws were more strict back then, than they are now.

Thanks for the review.I can think of a few other songs that should have been included on this set:

"Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" by Jermaine and Michael Jackson
"Torture"

with those two songs, this would have been a top-notch compilation.

confuse

That is absurd. There are so many songs that have the same title. In 1999,Whitney Houston released a single called "Heartbreak Hotel" and I don't think the Presley estate came after her.

You can't copyright a title. There is no legal basis to this

Good to see the newjck laced "nothin' (that compares to u)" is on there. Solid song. And sounds alot better then state of shock and torture.

I most definitely agree. Even without Quincy, Michael from 1978-1984 was just unstoppable! I mean just check out "Lovely One" and "Shake Your Body Down To the Ground!" Remarkable!! Without these great works NO OFF THE WALL and NO THRILLER! It's just that simple!

I've always felt albums like Truimph and Destiny were vastly underrated. These albums along with OTW and thriller consolidated MJ legendary status in my opinion.

I think I would like the Essential Jacksons better if "that's what You Get for Being Polite" and the very beautiful "Time waits for no one" were on there. Infact the more I think about it most of my fav MJ songs were with the Jacksons..

Exactly.I think Michael probably got paranoid and insisted on changing the title. He wimped out.In any case,I will always refer to the song as "Heartbreak Hotel".

btw,I just listened to this CD and I have to say...

isn't "State Of Shock" one of the crappiest songs ever?! I hadn't heard it since 1984 and I had forgotten how bad it is disbelief those lyrics could have been written by a fourth grader...

you got me on my knees
please baby please
I know you like to tease
but please baby please
you take it to me good
like you know you should
I love the way you walk
talk,baby,talk

I own this CD, I bought it when it was released. It was probably pretty silly to do, considering I own all the orignal Jacksons albums except "Goin' Places" on CD. However, in my own defense it is a great car CD for only "the hits." razz
