One Person Dead In Highway Shootout Involving T.I.'s Crew

1 dead in shootout involving rapper T.I.

Three others wounded after rap concert, party

BY EILEEN KELLEY | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER

ROSELAWN – One person is dead and three were injured in a shoot-out on Interstate 75 early Wednesday following an after-hours party featuring two rap groups including well-known rapper T.I.

Witnesses told police the trouble started with a verbal altercation and possible scuffle inside the Club Ritz, on Seymour Avenue in Roselawn.

The nightclub hosted an after-hours party for Atlanta-area rappers T.I. and Yung Joc, who had performed at Bogart’s on Tuesday night.

Clifford Harris, whose stage name is T.I., has been a Billboard success story with his latest album selling more than half a million copies in its first week. He has earned rave reviews for his performances on stage and film. Yung Joc is a fellow southern protégé and is signed to the T.I.’s Grand Hustle record label.

About three miles of the southbound lanes of I-75– from just south of Galbraith Road to Paddock Road -- were closed for seven hours after the 3 a.m. shootings, causing major backups for motorists. The highway reopened about 10:15 a.m.

Witnesses told the Enquirer the problem started when a large group of men at the night club became upset after money was being thrown from the stage by one member of a rapper’s entourage.

“It was supposed to be for the ladies,” said one witness, who asked not to be named. “But it (the money) was hitting the guys in the face and they were like, ‘We got money’ so why are you throwing money at us?’”

The tension mounted and moved outside, where the witness said T.I. was trying to get his group packed up in their vans.

“T.I. was telling his boys, ‘Come on let’s go. Let’s Go.’ And the Cincinnati boys were like, ‘Yea, let’s go.’”

The witness said about four people – believed to be from Cincinnati -- followed the rappers’ vans in a large vehicle, possibly a GMC Tahoe.

The witness said one shot was fired in the parking lot, but he did not think it was related to the tension.

“They were just showing off,” the witness said.

The names and conditions of those shot were not available. They were all taken to University Hospital.

Although police did confirm that the dead person was part of the T.I.’s entourage, they say T.I. was not injured.

Two vans belonging to T.I. were found on I-75. One victim was from one van. Three people in the other van were shot.

The wounded included one woman. A man, believed to be a victim, was escorted out of University Hospital before 7 a.m. by a police officer. The man had bandages on his arm.

The Club Ritz has been a site of controversy.

Community members and police asked the Cincinnati City Council to shut down the club last year, but a majority of council members voted to let the bar keep its liquor license. Two months after that – last June – three people were shot outside the club after a fight spilled outside.

The shooting raised the ire of Councilmen Chris Monzel and his staff.
“Councilman Monzel is one of the people who voted to remove the liquor license of that problem plagued establishment,” said Monzel’s chief of staff Brad Beckett. “It’s just a bad scene up there. You should expect to drive safely down 75.”

The owner of the Roselawn club, Andrew Williams, said last June the bar was closing until he and other workers could resolve problems with security – including guaranteeing having plenty of paid police and security officers on hand. Williams also said he would stop keeping the bar open after hours and promised to put up barricades around the parking lot to control traffic.

The witness at Club Ritz said there were plenty of law enforcement officers at the club late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

Many police were stationed around Bogart's in the area of Short Vine as the concert let out around 11 p.m. and there did not appear to be any problems, dispatchers said.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shootings to come forward.

“We need the eyes and the ears of the people,” said Lt. Tom Lanter. “We can only do so much without the cooperation of the community.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (513) 352-3040

I doubt it will end for a very long time. In fact, it will only get worse before it gets better.

I read this morning that another rapper was shot this week too. His name is Big Hawk. I'm not familiar with him, but he's just another in a long line with many more to come. Who knows what it will take to change these guys? And unfortunately, it's not only the rappers shooting each other up, but many young men in neighbourhoods all over north America are doing it every day. Innocent kids are getting caught in the crossfire and nothing's being done about it.

Hey man, no offence to you but if you want to live with that thought and that huge chip on your shoulder then nothing's ever going to change. If people start taking responsibility for themselves and their actions then perhaps change will come. If not, then your brothers will just continue to die one right after the next.

it is the fact that black people are the biggest haters out there, in the article it shows TI was trying to get out of the situation, and the boys from cincy just wanted to show off how tough they are and chase them.

Big Hawk's death had nuthin to do with rap music, he was killed not doing a rap show he was killed when trying to meet his friend, but he is a rapper so the media twist the story.

This is one of the reasons that I do NOT deal with rappers and don't go to ANY of their functions. This is beyond pathetic.

I was at the House of Blues the night before Biggy was killed. I told my friend that I would NOT be attending the party the next night. Guess what? Biggy was killed that night. These guys are beyond help at this point.

Shootings in Cincinnati is the 'norm' now days every single morning you have
to wake up on hearing who was shot up during the night, it doesn't hardly bother anyone because its B.O.B ..and B.O.B crime doesn't hit a nerve unless
it's a cop doing the killing then that's when everyone comes out
protesting and crying over the nonsense. It doesn't make any sense. confused

Self Destruction
Lyrics by the Stop The Violence All-Stars
KRS-One, Stetsasonic, Kool Moe Dee, MC Lyte, Just-Ice,
Doug E. Fresh, Heavy D, Public Enemy, Ms. Melodie

(Chorus)
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

KRS-One
Well, today's topic, self destruction
It really ain't the rap audience that's buggin
It's one or two suckas, ignorant brothers
Trying to rob and steal from one another
You get caught in the mid
So to crush the stereotype here's what we did
We got ourselves together so that you could unite
and fight for what's right
Not negative 'cause the way we live is positive
We don't kill our relatives

MC Delight of Stetsasonic
Pop pop pop when it's shot who's to blame?
Headlines, front page, and rap's the name
MC Delight's here to state the bottom line
That black on black crime was way before our time

Kool Moe Dee
Took a brother's life with a knife as his wife
Cried cause he died a trifling death
When he left his very last breath
Was I slept so watch your step
Back in the sixties our brothers and sisters were hanged
How could you gang bang?
I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan
and I shouldn't have to run from a black man cause that's
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

MC Lyte
Funky Fresh dressed to impress ready to party
Money in your pocket, dying to move your body
To get inside you paid the whole ten dollars
Scotch taped with a razor blade taped to your collar
Leave the guns and the crack and the knives alone
MC Lyte's on the microphone
Bum rushin and crushin, snatchin and taxin
I cram to understand why brother's don't be maxin
There's only one disco, they'll close one more
You ain't guarding the door so what you got a gun for?
Do you rob the rich and give to the poor?
Yo Daddy-O, school em some more

Daddy-O and Wise of Stetsasonic
Straight from the mouth of Wise and Daddy-O
Do a crime end up in jail and gotta go
Cause you could do crime and get paid
today And tomorrow you're behind bars in the worst way
Far from your family, cause you're locked away
Now tell me, do you really think crime pays?
Scheming on taking what your brother has?
You little suckers.. you talkin' all that jazz.

D-Nice
It's time to stand together in a unity
Cause if not then we're soon to be
Self destroyed, unemployed
The rap race will be lost without a trace
Or a clue but what to do
Is stop the violence and kick the science
Down the road that we call eternity
Where knowledge is formed and you'll learn to be
Self-sufficient, independent
To teach to each is what rap intended
But society wants to invade So do not walk this path they laid.
It's

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Ms. Melodie
I'm Ms. Melodie and I'm a born again rebel
The violence in rap must cease and settle
If we want to develop and grow to another level
We can't be guinea pigs for the devil
The enemy knows, they're no fools
Because everyone knows that hip-hop rules
So we gotta get a grip and grab what's wrong T
he opposition is weak and rap is strong

Doug E. Fresh
This is all about, no doubt, to stop violence
But first let's have a moment of silence
*Fresh beatboxes*...
swing Things been stated re-educated,
evaluated THoughts of the past have faded
The only thing left is the memories
of our belated and I hate it, when
Someone dies and gets all hurt up
For a silly gold chain by a chump;
Word up
It doesn't make you a big man,
and to want to go out and dis your brother man,
and you don't know that's part of the plan
Why? Cause rap music is in full demand.
Understand

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Just-Ice My name is Just-Ice a man not a prankster
I was known... as the gangster
But believe me that is no fun
The time is now to unite everyone
You don't have to be soft to be for peace
Robbin' and killin'and muderin is the least
You don't have to be chained by the beast
But party people it's time I release!

Heavy D
Aaayyyo here's the situation:
Idiocy Nonsense, violence,
not a good policy
Therefore we must ignore, fightin and fussin
Hev is at the door so there'll be no bum rushin
Let's get together so we don't be fallin apart
I heard a brother shot another. It broke my heart
I don't understand the difficulty, people
Love your brother, treat him as an equal
They call us animals uhnn uhnn I don't agree with them
I'll prove them wrong,
but right is what your proving them
Take heed before I lead to what I'm sayin
Or we'll all be on our knees, prayin

Fruitkwan of Stetsasonic
Yo Heavy D, deep in the heart of the matter
The self destruction is served on a platter
Makin a date not failing to aniticipate
They got greedy so they fell for the bait
That makes them a victim, picked then plucked
New jack in jail, but to the vets they're a duck
There's no one to rob, cause in jail you're a number
They never took the time to wonder about

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Chuck D & Flavor Flav of Public Enemy
Yes we urge to merge we live for the love
Of our people the hope that they get along
(Yeah, so we did a song)
Getting the point to our brothers and sisters
Who don't know the time (boyyyee, so we wrote a rhyme)
It's dead in your head, you know,
I'll drive to build And collect
ourselves with intellect,
come on To revolve to evolve to self respect
Cause we got to keep ourselves in check
Or else it's...

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

---What if God was one of us? Just a stranger on the bus trying to
make his way home..----If he was on the bus in Cincinnati, he better be wearing
a bullet proof vest. sad

It's the same in my city (Toronto). We used to be known as "Toronto the good", but over the past few years we've become much the same as many other cities. I too wake up every morning to news about shootings (BOB).

Where the hell are the black leaders? Why isn't anyone saying or doing something? You say it doesn't bother anybody because it's black on black, but it should bother everyone, especially those in the black community!! A 4 year old boy was shot last summer sitting in his front yard with his family and friends. Who else has to die before something is done?

Well im going to have to once again blame the labels for putting people into these situations. First of all labels dont care who you are and they will give a contract even if you have a crime riddled past, just make them some money and thats what they want. I have a feeling that if Malcolm X were alive today he would be preaching this, that this is a new form of slavery and he would be right. The argument will always be that there is Violence everywhere why pick on the rappers, well if u are going to use that constantly as your excuse then nothing will change, sure there is violence everywhere, but the root needs to get cut out. In this circumstance Labels need to start cracking down on who they hire, do a freaking background check, any history of violence and No deal, sorry but if u want it that bad start your own label. The fact that labels and MTV have the ability to reach millions is why the cancer is spreading, and the argument that there is just as much violence today as there used to be is bullshit, thats the same person who argues that music is better today than it used to be.

To further my point on labels doing checks into an artist they sign, there should also be penalities on them and the artist for any violent related incidents, and Im not talking about Vince Neil Punching Axl Rose, im talking about if Vince would have shot Axl, theres a big difference in the violence too, thats what people also use as their excuse "well theres violence from all music", ok keep preaching that as you bury another.

clapping--That's what I am talking about they are no where to be found,
couple weeks ago a leader of a group called 'The Black Fist' who was against
police brutality, was shot and killed by another black man because he had beef with his brother. Anyone come out? Anything said? Not one Person. Not one word. I am glad that they didn't show out. BUT
If it was the police who had pulled the trigger , it would have been the biggest scene ever. neutral

Killing one another is so ignorant. It doesn't matter what race you are
settle your differences in a much better way.
Take it old school. Remember the break dance battles? Freestyle battles?
Remember just plain old fighting like this?----->>>> bitchfight --those were the days. neutral

chuckaducci ISN'T using it as a form of endearment in this context. He's making a point. No matter how much a black man achieves in this country, he will always be viewed less favorably, and often treated less favorably, than his white counterparts.

The real tragedy, which is what chuckaducci I think is getting at, is when our brothers and sisters are held responsible for validating negative perceptions of them. You have to understand the context, kisscamille.

but i digress.

Maybe T.I. didn't want any trouble when he went to the club. But even if that's true, his public perception is that this is part of his lifestyle. And he created that perception through his own rhymes, following the same basic formula:

I'm street. I rose from the street. I'm now rich. I got "money, cash, hoes." Everyone -- you the listener included -- hates on me and are out to get me. But I'll take care of myself and my crew's got my back. They're packin'. You wanna go for yours, I'll be ready. But I'm still gonna be rich and on top. So be like me.

Most hit-pop MCs these days follow this basic blueprint. And then they wonder why they get "tried" like they do, in the street, in court, at the club, wherever.

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

KRS-One
Well, today's topic, self destruction
It really ain't the rap audience that's buggin
It's one or two suckas, ignorant brothers
Trying to rob and steal from one another
You get caught in the mid
So to crush the stereotype here's what we did
We got ourselves together so that you could unite
and fight for what's right
Not negative 'cause the way we live is positive
We don't kill our relatives

MC Delight of Stetsasonic
Pop pop pop when it's shot who's to blame?
Headlines, front page, and rap's the name
MC Delight's here to state the bottom line
That black on black crime was way before our time

Kool Moe Dee
Took a brother's life with a knife as his wife
Cried cause he died a trifling death
When he left his very last breath
Was I slept so watch your step
Back in the sixties our brothers and sisters were hanged
How could you gang bang?
I never ever ran from the Ku Klux Klan
and I shouldn't have to run from a black man cause that's
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

MC Lyte
Funky Fresh dressed to impress ready to party
Money in your pocket, dying to move your body
To get inside you paid the whole ten dollars
Scotch taped with a razor blade taped to your collar
Leave the guns and the crack and the knives alone
MC Lyte's on the microphone
Bum rushin and crushin, snatchin and taxin
I cram to understand why brother's don't be maxin
There's only one disco, they'll close one more
You ain't guarding the door so what you got a gun for?
Do you rob the rich and give to the poor?
Yo Daddy-O, school em some more

Daddy-O and Wise of Stetsasonic
Straight from the mouth of Wise and Daddy-O
Do a crime end up in jail and gotta go
Cause you could do crime and get paid
today And tomorrow you're behind bars in the worst way
Far from your family, cause you're locked away
Now tell me, do you really think crime pays?
Scheming on taking what your brother has?
You little suckers.. you talkin' all that jazz.

D-Nice
It's time to stand together in a unity
Cause if not then we're soon to be
Self destroyed, unemployed
The rap race will be lost without a trace
Or a clue but what to do
Is stop the violence and kick the science
Down the road that we call eternity
Where knowledge is formed and you'll learn to be
Self-sufficient, independent
To teach to each is what rap intended
But society wants to invade So do not walk this path they laid.
It's

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Ms. Melodie
I'm Ms. Melodie and I'm a born again rebel
The violence in rap must cease and settle
If we want to develop and grow to another level
We can't be guinea pigs for the devil
The enemy knows, they're no fools
Because everyone knows that hip-hop rules
So we gotta get a grip and grab what's wrong T
he opposition is weak and rap is strong

Doug E. Fresh
This is all about, no doubt, to stop violence
But first let's have a moment of silence
*Fresh beatboxes*...
swing Things been stated re-educated,
evaluated THoughts of the past have faded
The only thing left is the memories
of our belated and I hate it, when
Someone dies and gets all hurt up
For a silly gold chain by a chump;
Word up
It doesn't make you a big man,
and to want to go out and dis your brother man,
and you don't know that's part of the plan
Why? Cause rap music is in full demand.
Understand

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Just-Ice My name is Just-Ice a man not a prankster
I was known... as the gangster
But believe me that is no fun
The time is now to unite everyone
You don't have to be soft to be for peace
Robbin' and killin'and muderin is the least
You don't have to be chained by the beast
But party people it's time I release!

Heavy D
Aaayyyo here's the situation:
Idiocy Nonsense, violence,
not a good policy
Therefore we must ignore, fightin and fussin
Hev is at the door so there'll be no bum rushin
Let's get together so we don't be fallin apart
I heard a brother shot another. It broke my heart
I don't understand the difficulty, people
Love your brother, treat him as an equal
They call us animals uhnn uhnn I don't agree with them
I'll prove them wrong,
but right is what your proving them
Take heed before I lead to what I'm sayin
Or we'll all be on our knees, prayin

Fruitkwan of Stetsasonic
Yo Heavy D, deep in the heart of the matter
The self destruction is served on a platter
Makin a date not failing to aniticipate
They got greedy so they fell for the bait
That makes them a victim, picked then plucked
New jack in jail, but to the vets they're a duck
There's no one to rob, cause in jail you're a number
They never took the time to wonder about

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Chuck D & Flavor Flav of Public Enemy
Yes we urge to merge we live for the love
Of our people the hope that they get along
(Yeah, so we did a song)
Getting the point to our brothers and sisters
Who don't know the time (boyyyee, so we wrote a rhyme)
It's dead in your head, you know,
I'll drive to build And collect
ourselves with intellect,
come on To revolve to evolve to self respect
Cause we got to keep ourselves in check
Or else it's...

Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction
Self Destruction, ya headed for Self Destruction

Stupid fuckers. Let's have done and send any rappers who seem to glorify violence to an isolated island, load it with weapons and let them have at it with each other.

Stick it on PPV of course. All profits to a worthy cause of course.

What do you call a talented, chart topping black man in America?

A nigger.

Man,.....when will we learn?

And why is it that so many still want to use this word as a form of endearment? It boggles my mind. It's like a white person from a trailer park accepting being labelled as trailer trash. I just don't get it and I guess I never will.

Being Black myself, I've never used the nigger as a "term of endearment". If you meant Nigga, say that. Semantics I know, however if it's gonna thrown around anytime somebody talks about Hip Hop, then there should be some clarity on what we're talking about. I TRY not to use the word as much as I can, but sometimes it's just how Niggas talk.

I know alot of folks on the org HATE Hip Hop. That's cool but what these folks don't understand is that Hip Hop is not all the same. For every lame "laffy taffy" ass, "chingaling" ass, punk ass fitty cent, there are as many artists doing shit quite to the contrary. It's a select few who can't seem to get their wig on right, and it fucks up (and/or reinforces) peoples conception of a really beautiful music.

It doesn't make any sense. confused

Now wait a minute, y'all, there are still MC's out there holdin' it down. Witness Kelvin Mercer from De La Soul, on "Much More," from 2004's The Grind Date.

I got verb skills, babies and bills, brothers who smoke krills
and still tryin to get himself together from it
Knowin he can't quite run it like me
I'm on the cutting edge of what's alleged to be, hot
And when you rock, it's just impersonations of me
The rightest MC, MP with the V in the middle
I belittle your plan, courtesy, of NY dirty C my man
My base of fans are made up of many; with kids allergic
to belts letting they mind melt from drinkin the Henny
And them straight and narrow types who be waitin to hear
them drums say the revolution is near - are you listening?
Are your eardrums open for christening?
We God Body MC's with these tools
While some others play God, they just god damn fools with it
I don't cuff mics, I rough mics up rough and rugged
Get the girls to love it
Still and all five-oh came to my mic check
Tellin me I left lacerations around my mic's neck
Domestically disputed and you just might get
the undisputed underdog servin y'all threat . . .
