aiight check it out...i love kanye west's "touch the sky"...but it wasn't his voice, it was the music. so i'm asking myself why does that sound so familiar...2 weeks later i'm cleaning up and come across my curtis mayfield 3-disc anthology and sure enough, "move on up", the song KW sampled is on there--8 MINUTES LONG !. so, indirectly, KW has rekindled my interest in Curtis Mayfield. I know most people on here hate/dislike hip hop/rap, but some of it is actually pretty good and if some kid can learn about curtis, james or george from listening to it, that groovy!

The same thing has happened to me also. I've heard a song sampled and thought it sounded familiar, then searched for the original song. Sometimes it has even been a song that I already have in my collection but had always skipped over throughout the years.

It's different with us than it is with most of these kids. We grew up on music and loved it so we are going to search it out. Most of these kids don't give a damn who sampled it. Lots of times when they hear the original, they say...."Ewww, I don't like that. It doesn't sound as good as when (insert rapper's name) did it". I've even had some of them tell me that the original was too fast. They prefer dead stuff, it's all they know.

My grade 12 buddies (a bunch of 17-year-olds) used to "jam" to - and I mean, how can you really jam to it, but I digress - What's Luv, that awful rap song with Fat Joe & Ashitty that went to #2 a few years back. Anyway, I'd had enough. I told them that all they did was took a MIDI file of What's Love Got To Do With It and programmed it to play a damn ringtone loop on a kiddie CASIO keyboard. Even some of the lyrics were ripped ("What's love got to do, got to do with it"). Their response? UHHHHH...WHO'S TINA TURNER So anyway, I said, "Fuck it, no hope for them."

And the irony is the song has no sample credited.

Last year, Gwen Stefani released a single based on "Between The Sheets" by the Isley Brothers. My little brother recognized this as the Biggie sample for "Big Poppa" and was inquisitive enough to ask me to hear the Isley's original.

But his reaction was like... "it doesn't sound as cool as Biggie's", and that pissed me off!

I think I'm going to sample Cinister Cee's whole album from start to finish and rap over it myself. Now that's art.

What trips me out is, the R&B stations in my area very rarely play any of the Isley Brothers' uptempo funk. They absolutely wear out the songs "Groove With You", "Voyage To Atlantis", "Footsteps In The Dark", and "Between The Sheets". I've seen people on up into their 20s that will argue you down that The Isley Brothers was a "slow jam group" only. If I play them a jam like "Living In The Life", "Go All The Way", or "Don't Let Go", they say "who's that singing that rock shit". When I tell them it's The Isley Brothers, they tell me I'm a damn liar.
