Every once in a while I do a thread about writers like songwiter/arranger/producer/keyboardist Skip Scarborough (1944-2003): This is a list of just some of the hits he wrote for different artists: Love's Holiday - Earth Wind and Fire Can't Hide Love - Earth Wind and Fire, Creative Source I'll Write A Song For You - Earth Wind and Fire Don't Ask My Neighbor - The Emotions Lovely Day - Bill Withers Love Ballad (Much More Than They Can see) - L.T.D. Love Changes - Mother's Finest Giving You the Best That I Got - Anita Baker Living Inside Your Love - Earl Klugh, George Benson The Answer Is You - Phyllis Hyman No One Can Love You More- Phyllis Hyman Come what May - Patti Labelle It's Alright With Me - Patti Labelle Love and Learn - Patti Labelle Don't Wanna Come Back - Mother's Finest He was also the producer for Con Funk Shun and played keyboards on albums like Donald Byrd's Places and Spaces (1975) and Caricatures(1976) Anybody else out there got Love and Respect for Skip?? ... After reading that list of songs, I have a lot of respect for him. There wasn't one bad song on that list. It seems as though we pay more attention to songwriters/producers now than back then, and the songwriter/producers back then were better than today's beatmakers. | |

Yeah, as the writers, they pretty much stayed in the background, without a lot of fanfare, although the artists certainly knew whose songs they wanted to sing. Philip Bailey of Earth Wind and Fire once said that one Scarborough tune they always wished that they had done was Love Ballad (Much More Than They Can See). Ironically, at the time Skip wrote it, he had a hard time getting anyone to use it. But after LTD's Jeffery Osborne did the tune, it became a classic and other people like George Benson began to cover it... ... I didn't know Skip wrote "The Answer Is You"
Most songwriters would love to have a body of work that classy. Thom Bell and Linda Creed are great also. I wish there could be a documentary on them and Charles Stephney.
