What's all this about burning churches?

There's no one burning chruches in Norway.
And there are no polar bears walking the streets either.

You're mixing up Death Metal with Black Metal there.

I didn't think there were polar bears walking the streets. But I saw a documentary recently which mentioned several historic churches burnt to the ground near Bergen, tied to the death metal movement. Could be a myth, but it was on mainstream news and several death metal musicians have come out in support of it.

Black metal is a musical genre which emerged in the early 1980s predating the great expansion of heavy metal 'extreme' genres. Black metal evolved from thrash metal, as did its sister genre death metal.

There are two views on the genre. Their influence is most apparent in the Satanic or pagan imagery, anti-Christian lyrics and occult themes.

They mention this Vikernes guy in the movie and interview a couple others who worship Satan. Their ideology seems to promote some idea of the "Uber-Mensch" with no compassion for the weak.
