Body Count, Cop Killer!

I am sure we all remember the controversy. Ice-T decided to debut his heavy metal band, Body Count. Everything was good for about 6 months, because their debut album was out, had sold harldy any albums and was sinking into oblivion on the charts. A 'community group' sends one of the Bodycount songs to the Los Angeles police for study. The infamous song is Cop Killer, soon to be an underground classic. What happens tells us a lot about the power of the police and the media. Police protest Ice-T shows, they threaten to kill him, his record company, Warner Brothers (remember them?) is threatened to either drop Body Count or lose stock prices. Warners supports Ice, under terrible circumstances, but they do. Ice decides later, that for the best, he should pull Cop Killer from the album and just give the single away free to fans. This publicity starts a furur. The album goes back up the charts, but at what cost? To this day, some people question Ice-T on that decision. Now Ice is a tv actor, and all we have left is this song--controversial, to be sure, but one great rock song. Because, rock is good when it pisses people off.

Amen to that. horns headbang

I went to the Ice T/Body Count/Eye n I show at Tipitina's in New Orleans....awesome show to say the least...but suffered from a bit of misinformation as a story circulated that there'd been a stabbing during the show....TOTAL BULLSHIT...but another example of the power of the media to bury controversy...

....The Cop Killer track to this day remains one of my fave jams of all time...if for no other reason than its the only rock song that my thug friends ever liked.... lol
