I think that's just how the mind's memory works. Like obviously if you have forgotten about some groups or singers for good, then you won't recall them instantly for your list today.

Yeah, Don's The Man!! I saw a performance a few year back that included Lenny White on drums Don Blackman on keys, and Foley on Basses!

But I didn't like Don's last Cd, called "Listen"...my advice is..."Don't"..it was weird, it's like he forgot all the things that made that first album(And his stuff with Lenny White) So funky and melodic....

omg ..... worship that must've ROCKED HARD ! ... where was that at & did U tape that ?
Maaaan , Lenny & Don go waaaayyyy back 2 the Twennynine days .
Remember Peanut Butter ( 1979 ) & Time ( 1978 + Marcus Miller ) or Universal Love ( 1978 ) ?

The thing i regret about the album , is that the real live drums are missing ... it sounds a bit too clinic .
But nevertheless , i think there's a real gem in there like Ghetto Lament which is Don's salute to the late Weldon Irvine , where Don kinda started off his musical voyage .
Other cats like Lenny , Nard , Tom Browne , Bobby Broom and many more have started in Weldon's Jamaican funk school @ Queens , NY.

Some other tracks i dig on Listen :

Get Your Freak On
although with the mechanical drum , i felt a kinda same vibe as with Deaf Hook Up Connection , You Ain't Hip & Yabadabadoo.

Just Can't Get Enough + This Thing Called Love
Now there's a story behind these tracks , because if you listen close , you'll hear that the acoustic-sound is a slight different than most of the tracks on Listen.
I knew about the excistance of them already before it eventually was released on that cd .
In a magazine-article from about 1987 , there was the mentioning of an unreleased project called LBR , which stood for the initials of Don and 2 other artists ( which names i have to look up @ home ).
Now , when Listen finally came out , i recognised those other artists names , and everything i had wondered about that LBR-project fell in place .
So yeah , for me personally them songs are of much value .

And besides that , if tracks from Listen are gonna be played live , then the vibe is so much different ... something i already experienced at another concert from him , back in 2000 .
The London fans go deep when digging on jams during a concert .... one of the first times i felt such an atmosphere .

Yeah, I was a Big Lenny White and Twennynine fan (Best of Friends was one o'my favorites! also Lenny's album, Streamline, with Don, and Marcus Miller)

I gotta respect the tribute for Weldon, and it was his tune after all. The only reason I didnt like the newer version of Ghetto Lament is that I have an amazing version that Don, Lenny, and EW&F's Larry Dunn produced for Sylvia St. James (on her album, "Magic")around '81...Have you heard that version? it also features Dave Gruisin's string arrangements, and a great Don Blackman piano solo at the end....it's one of my favorite pieces of all time...so when I heard Don's newer version, I was like,"....mmmmm....ok, I guess...."

Btw, I did acouple of threads on the whole Jamaica, Queens Kats thing...and Yeah, Weldon Irvine was like their Quincy Jones, all those Kats came through his bands: Tom Browne, Lenny, Marcus Miller, Don, Bernard Wright, Omar Hakim, Bobby Broom, etc....

Yeah, I'm sure Listen will be much better live! the record just sounded so stiff, Like you said, because of the rigid mechanical drum feel...and I love hearing him on the acoustic Piano, too! I probably missed that feel...

Hahaa , i hear ya ... and soon as i get home , Sylvia's on the deck to check music
Thanx 4 that reminder ... i must admit that i've overlooked that version on her album boxed
You have that other Sylvia's 1981 album too , including " Behind My Back " , which came orginally from UK-wiz-producer/musician Nigel Martinez ?

Which artists did you dig the most DURING the 80s?

I was into Tina Turner, MJ, Janet, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Phil Collins, Lionel Ritchie, Whitney, Sheena, Gloria Estefan, Sammy Hagar, Jody ("don't you want me") Watley, Huey Lewis, Prince, Tom petty, and esp THE POINTER SISTERS! my first concert.

in retrospect there is a lot of 80s music I listen to NOW that I like better, more r&b, but i guess i was a pop whore as a little kid.

By the end of this week, I'll have a long list. Just you wait..... lol

I have to admit, two tracks I always played over and over were "Like A Baby" , and their version of the Isley Brothers tune, "If You Were There"...

The Fixx
Bow Wow Wow
The Go-Go's
The Doors
Van Halen
Siouxie and the Banshees

A lot of these are not 80's bands, but that's pretty much who I listened to in the 80's. Almost none of which I listen to now.
