And artists like Me'Shell or Mint Condition are pretty much in the sales bracket where their style of music genuinely belongs to. It's a conscious choice to choose the style of music you are going to do under your artist moniker.

In otherwords, you need to put out trash in order to sell nod

I forgot one, as someone said in here 'gavin friday', how could i forgot him?

His debut album 'Each man kills the thing he loves' is a forgotten classic, the kind of record that can help you trough a period of depression, as it did for me ...lol

Love--maybe not underrated but underknown.

Badly Drawn Boy--same, though I think he's better known in England.

whoknows

Man, can't believe I forgot this woman!

Bobbie Gentry!

Bobbie who? Bobbie Gentry. Best remembered now as the most stunningly gifted one hit wonder of all time. She had one of the biggest hits of the 60s "Ode To Billie Joe" (which was turned into a great film in 1976). She never had a big US hit again although she wrote masterpiece after masterpiece for the next 7 years before mysteriously disappearing in 75. To this day no one knows where she is or what she's doing.
But if any of you appreciate great songwriting this is one of the best writers of the last century. As lyrically sophisticated as Joni, but with a completely different sensibility. She sang of small town life, prostitution, under age sex, the evils of gossip, hypocrisy and random death. It's not hard to see why she was pushed to the margins. She also had a really great husky voice, sounding a lot like Aretha on the low notes. There was a lot of sadness in her voice but a lot of wit in her music. Never heard her mentioned on the org once so I thought I'd better dig up this thread and give the lady her due.

whoknows

Prince!

Of course, around here he's god, but out there he stopped getting his due critically a long time ago, and never really did get it from Joe Public. Whenever I see those 100 best albums polls. I'll see MJ, NIRVANA(wtf!), even Madonna(?) with entries way above P's one entry SOTT. PR, 1999,etc don't even get a look in. Just the other day I mentioned P to a young sound engineer. His response? "I've heard of him. He changed his name didn't he?" But he raved about Freddie Mercury and Elton John. Would Dirt Cobain be an icon today if he hadn't blown his brains out? I doubt it. P's sin was living long enough to taint the memory of his greatness, but if P makes a hundred crap albums and becomes a Muslim fundamentalist tomorrow the uniqueness of his achievement could never be sidelined in a just world
