what does my music collection say about me?

I've heard it said that a person's taste in music tells a lot about them. Out of idle curiosity, I thought I'd list out my CD's (not my vinyls, cassettes, or MP3's though. God, we'd be here all week!) and see what residents of the Music & More forum see my music saying for me. For a bit of background I'm 21, female, bi, and Canadian. And yes, I am massively bored right now.

That's a pretty good foundation. You've got a lot of classic artists covered. As for what it says about you, perhaps that you prefer traditional rock 'n' roll, but you can take a chance outside the norm every now and then (i.e. Peaches). Maybe you should explore those left of center artists more.

Maybe that she's sampling a lot and is still trying to find her niche? I don't think hits compilations are so bad if they are by artists outside of your usual scope (I couldn't tolerate any more Dylan other than 'The Essential Bob Dylan') and that your collection is clearly focused and deep in another genre that you like. It seems like she hasn't found that genre yet. Perhaps classic rock? She should talk to Minneapolisgenius or theAudience.

geek exactly. As a Prince fan, if someone asked you what Prince album to buy first, you wouldn't tell them to buy the greatest hits. It would be PR, SOTT, a definitive album in the catalog, not a record company cash in. If I was with you her at the store I would have given her Plastic Ono Band not Legend, that album needs to be experienced. Same with the Who. I think there's usually an album or two that can take the place of a greatest hits package. With someone like Dylan who has two phases that would have been harder. When unsure it's always best to consult. I have several books I keep at home and ofcourse use web resources

mixes or home-made comps are better.

this is a great tool http://www.amazon.com/gp/...e&n=283155

I disagree. If someone asked me what Prince album to buy first I would tell them to get the Hits/B-Sides. Suppose they like one Prince era and not the other? I think if you are unsure about an artist you should sample all phases of their work before focusing on one album and possibly being disappointed and turned off for a long period of time and missing out on other albums that you would like. That happened to me with Saint Etienne.

Here's a perfect example right here on the org.: http://www.prince.org/msg/8/185496 Someone is asking which Grace Jones album to buy first and most people are saying the Compass Point Sessions hits album. If you like it from start to finish, then you can start investigating the studio albums.

I think it's trial and error, The Hits/The B-Sides gives little if any context of the era in which those tracks were made or how they appear on the album itself.

Does one understand the context of the intro to Let's Go Crazy if they don't hear it at the begining of Purple Rain or Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough at the begining of Off The Wall.

It's always best to hear an artists work chronoligically or at least the album that defined their carrer. An artists like Grace Jones, who imo had alotta weak tracks, a good collection might suffice. A good comp like Original Musiquarium still doesn't fit the bill for someone like Stevie Wonder though. To me it's like a book, I wanna read the entire book even if some parts might suck rather then selected great chapters in one anthology.

I know I should, but I'm a lazy music buyer! lol

I have a lot of the actual albums by different artists in the vinyl collection I inherited from my dad, and I really can't be arsed to re-buy everything. If I need somewthing that doesn't show up on a greatest hits on CD that desperately, I burn it onto a mix. shrug

I know the Backstreet Boys are cheesy as fuck, but I can't bring myself to give them up. I owe so much to them it's really kinda sad. My love of Prince (3 cheers for AJ and Kevin for insisting fans check out the wee purple one, eh?) slash fan fics, Velvet Goldmine, the glories of men in eyeliner, and I say this in all serious, my relationship with my best friend. Long story, that.

Easier said than done where I live, but I do my best. I'm really digging my friend's roommates' metal band right now. Pity they don't have a CD or even any cassettes that don't sound like hell. lol

So far it's easier for me to definitely say what I don't like rather than what I do.

To make a long, painful story extremely short, we'd gotten in a huge, nasty, middle school brawl. We didn't speak for almost 9 months -that's forever when you're 13. We'd gotten placed in the same art class as a boy who, in the manner of 13 year old boys asserting their masculinity everywhere -loudly and unprovoked proclaimed BSB fags. Shocked into action, we both argued their hetero status at once. falloff redface We ended up apoligizing to each other, and by the end of class agreed to try this whole friend thing again. We haven't fought since -though our opinion on the Boys' sexuality has shifted a bit over the years. razz
