"Hello, It's Me"...which version?

I dug thru the crates this past weekend and pulled out the classic "Something/Anything" by the great Todd Rundgren. (This joint deserves it's own thread). Todd's pop sensibilty and creativity made this amazing, one man band, double disc recording a classic. "Hello, It's Me" became one of LP's big hits in 1972 and hit the top ten that year. But not too long after that, The Isley Brothers recorded their own killer version of it and pretty much made it their own.

So which version do you like better? Todd's or The Isley's?

Todd .... is there really any discussion? Todd Rundgren at his best, one of the greatest songs ever recorded, if you ask me.

either 'something anything' , 'runt..the ballad' or his compilation on 'rhino' records has to be in your collection.

Thanx for the suggestion, gonna play something, anything right now!

2 perfect songs. Both are so strong and so different that you can listen to them back to back without feeling redundancy.

Yes, most defintely a great and timeless song! I could not agree more!
For me, I like the version that Groove Theory did the best. Amel Larrieaux killed it dead. No need to remake it again!

The song is like a letter to his beloved one, and that's the way Todd's version really sounds, nothing more nothing less.

Ronald (?) Isley is singing hello hello hello in the first 30 seconds which makes no sense at all to the lyrics itself, apart from beeing an astronaut callin' his beloved one on earth.

I hate to ask this question.....what kind of music does Todd make? I don't think I've ever heard one of his songs.

love em both, was introduced to todd's genius by a friend who i introduced to P.

Hoja is my fav todd song. i grew even more impressed with him when Liv Tyler said he was her "daddy of the heart" since steven wasn't around much and todd was her mom's boyfriend so he basically raised her.

A nice combination of Pop/Rock/R&B flavored tunes.

You've probably heard a few and not known it...

We Gotta Get You a Woman
I Saw the Light
Can We Still Be Friends
Bang on the Drum All Day

...are some of the more popular tunes but he's much deeper than that.

1st solo period...

Through Utopia...

And a 2nd/parallel solo career...

...a random sampling of a rather large catalog.

You're quite welcome.

Don't be thrown by Two Little Hitlers. Not sure why it was included.
It always appeared out of place to me against the rest of the material.

For me, it's a tie between the slower Nazz version, and the Isley Bros version...

The Nazz version is the pure essence of the song. No frills.
When I listen to the Something/Anything? version it sounds technically better but overproduced or something...anything?

What it is, my brother Spyz?! My kindred soul. It's no secret on here to anyone who pays any kind of attention to my threads/posts that I ADORE The Isley's AND Todd as artists. That said, I gotta go with Todd's version, hands down.

Credit Todd Rundgren for sure, it's a really great song...surprisingly, I don't care too much for the Isley Bros version, and I am WAY into their cover versions of others people's stuff...again, I really think A Larrieux laid waste to this cut...Incredible! Does anyone know if she is still doing gigs in Santa Monica?

And who else has done versions of Hello It's Me? I am curious. Great thread!

Oh no. Don't recommend that. That's his worst album to many.
