not really speakin' for the fans , but also the press, that is allowed considering the topic, right? at first most people didn't like the 2nd goldfrapp, believe me , i know, i sold a lot of copies of the first album.
the 2nd did allright during the following months, but at first....

I guess if you were expecting more Portishead, you could have been disappointed with 'Black Cherry' at first, but fans love it now.

I had only read positive reviews at the time. There's a summary on metacritic.com: http://www.metacritic.com...=goldfrapp

Everybody thinks that Diver Down by Van Halen is bad, because it has all these covers and is about 12 minutes per side, but the songs, as a whole, are pretty good.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Dare I say "3121" from the skinny motherfucker with the high voice?

I thought the general consensus here was that orgers liked '3121'.

Oh, good. I thought there was some negative reactions to it, which would surprise me.

My parents had this one, was it the "sellout"?

Metallica - Load

Your list was tight until this disbelief

I know that I'm "supposed" to hate this, but I just can't. When I was in high school, this album was everywhere. I can barely listen to "King Nothing", "Until It Sleeps", or "Hero of the Day" without thinking of what I was doing when I first saw the videos/heard the songs on the radio. Before this CD came out, I was mainly into pop stuff like Madonna and Janet, or The Beatles. I hadn't really bought any real "rock" stuff other than the crap that was clogging the alternative charts at the time (311, Bush, Silverchair). Load introduced me to Metallica, and gave me my favorite band (at least for a few years). After Load, I went out and bought every single Metallica CD in print, and got into a lot heavier music... all still mainstream, but much heavier than what I was previously listening to (Nine Inch Nails, Manson, White Zombie, Alice in Chains, Ozzy).

Of course, my tastes changed as I got older, and Metallica began to suck (S&M, Garage Inc, suing their fans), so I gradually grew out of them. But I'll always credit them (and Load) with exposing me to the harder side of rock and roll.

I know that everyone really hated her 2nd to last album, which I think was self titled. I really liked that album, even though a lot of people were angry about it.

A few I was gonna list have already been mentioned. So, I'll go with one that hasn't been listed yet.

Suede's "Head Music" is an album I love but it often mentioned as both a sellout and a failure by the press, fans and even the band themselves.

Filled with silly lyrics and straight forward pop which had never been seen before on a Suede album, Head Music is a stand-out in their catalogue. I'm in the minority that feel it's a FANTASTIC stand-out. They tried for something different on this album. Does every track work? Certainly not. But it felt like they put in a real effort to create something new. When it works, IMO it REALLY works. "She's In Fashion" is one of my all time favorite pop songs.

Even with the tracks that don't work as well, I'd take this album any day over their lazy final release, "A New Morning" which is nothing but a retread of every sound and lyric we'd ever heard Suede do.

Anywho...that's my example.

"Blondes Have More Fun" by Rod Stewart and "Parallel Lines" (I think) by Blondie (the one with "Heart Of Glass"). Rock fans were pissed that these two sold out to disco but I loved it.

Marilyn Manson- The Golden Age of Grotesque(very underrated)

Spinning this right now, and it is much better upon further listening. It is very hooky, and the music is really punchy. At the time, I just felt that it was a retreat from his edgier earlier work. I think Manson would do a great job producing a pop artist; someone like Pink could collaborate pretty well with him. He has a knack for a catchy song; I can imagine her singing something like "Use Your Fist and Not Your Mouth".

I'ma hardcore white stripes fan.... it's borderline. I like that album too though.

I guess I don't cruise the White Stripes websites so I don't know what anybody thinks, but I love that cd. "Take, Take, Take" and "Forever for Her (Is Over for Me) are two of my absolute favorite Stripes songs.
