The kid was in rare form that night...he was in the zone..I haven't heard him play like that before or after. "I wasn't invited to shake hands with Hitler, but I wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either" ~ Jesse Owens

Which one do you prefer? Impossible to recall, I've taped over most of my old funkadelic live boots a long time ago I think the only live versions I have left are actually from the same year. And now that I've checked on it, the only one I have on CD is the same as on this clip... I think I have to certain degree eat my own words now...

As much props as Mr. Hazel deserves for being the originator and a bad-ass on the six-string, I have always favored Hampton on Maggot Brain. Check out his live versions of the jam (as well as others such as Cosmic Slop and Red Hot Mama) and I don't think he could be touched. He is one of my all-time guitar heroes and I believe gets overshadowed by Hazel. This from a lifelong funkateer who has seen the band more than 50 times dating back to the late 1970s.
Peace, Scott If you've got funk, you've got style.

SPYZFAN1 said: Yes it is..but I'm not Jimi Hazel..I'm just a big fan. (lol) Eddie Hazel did a lot for the Mob besides play lead guitar. He arranged and co-wrote the whole killer "Standing On The Verge" LP and the "Free Your Mind" LP. He also co wrote "Shakey Ground" for the Temps in 74 and worked briefly at Motown. Eddie also sang his ass off on a lot of obscure Parliament tunes and in 78, he was the musical arranger for Bonnie Pointer's solo LP (which is a collector's item).
Eddie also influnced a legion of guitarists (famous and not so famous)..some of them are here on this board. Eddie did a LOT in the brief time he was here. Hello...did someone call me? SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

..where is my brother Black Guitarizt? Right here, my bro-ham! Dig, I've stated it several times on here in the past that Hazel is a MAJOR influence on my playing. There are some folks on here that can and will attest to these. (coughing, Paligap). Anyways, this version of MB is coldblooded. Hampton, who can burn, isn't on Hazel to me, but that's o.k. Dwayne is the cat that ya'll shouldn't sleep on, anyways. I prefer him over Hampton, hands down. But none of George's guitarists were on Hazel, in my mind. Byrd is fierce. He's always been my fave next to Eddie. Love Alive, you should pick up "Games, Dames, & Guitar Thangs" and "Rest In P" if you haven't got them. It's probably some of the best music ever created by man. Eddie's just pouring his soul out on his guitar.

Mike murdered that solo!!!! I'd bet big cash that not only could prince play it, he could TOP it. whoaaa! I'm the biggest Prince cheerleader here, but I dunno 'bout that... I ain't no guitar player. I can only speak about what I feel from the music, so bear with me. from what I've seen and heard, the difference for me is not that Prince don't get into the groove, but most times he won't hold it long enough. lemme try to explain what I mean. Prince will get into a sweet groove and then, bam, he'll change up on ya before you can get satisfaction from it. kinda like coitus interruptus or something. ya know how it is when you're in the clinch and you get a good rhythm going and suddenly your partner changes the stroke? that's what I mean. (incidentally, I think homicide is justifiable in such cases) and yes I'm a female. Brotha P has some premature "you know what" goin' on, see? Joy in Rep is eargasm, but Maggot Brain is multiple eargasm,..know what I mean? the only time I've seen Prince come close to holding it down for that long is on The War and I love it. I'm not prepared to say that I think Prince could top maggot brain today, but the thing I love about him is that I know that he COULD do it tomorrow if he put his mind to it. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Yep and also Ruth Copeland's two albums. That's some of Eddie's best playing, to me. Funkadelic is ALL over Ruth's albums AND Eddie and Co. played as her backing band when she toured. They opened for Sly! Now can u get to that, by brother?! SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
