Travelin' At The Speed Of Thought(1977)----the mysterious,forgotten OJays album that nobody ever talks about 
Currently,I'm in the process of collecting all of the O'Jays CDs and I finally got their 1977 album 'Travelin At The Speed Of Thought'.It's available as part of a 2-CD set with their 1976 album 'Message In The Music'.For years,I always wondered why this album seemed so mysterious.It was released at the height of their popularity,yet no one ever lists it as one of their favorites,and only one song "Work On Me" was released as a single.That song reached the R&B Top Ten,but it's wierd that no other singles were released from this project.In addition,the album was released in May '77 before the single! The liner notes shed some light on what was going on: member William Powell was ill and left the band,and he was replaced by Sammy Strain,who makes his recording debut on 'Travelin'.Powell passed away on May 26th,1977,only days after 'Travelin...' was released.Thus,the guys and their record company probably didn't feel like going all out with the promotion for this project.Also,this album was sandwiched between what is arguably two of their best albums: 1976's 'Message In The Music' and 1978's 'So Full Of Love'. In any case,'Travelin' is a good album.Producers Gamble and Huff could do no wrong in the 70s and they always supplied their biggest act with top-notch material."We're All In This Thing Together" is a highlight of this album,and it is the most obvious choice for a second single,if there had been one.There's also an interesting remake of the 1975 Morris Albert classic "Feelings",but don't roll your eyes.....the OJays do a superb job!

shit this is a bad ass album, ive been trying ti find a vinyl of this.everytime i go vinyl diggin' i cant find it. but i will... oh yes... i will | |

Have to admit i'm not familiar with this album, although i heared a lot of o'jays throughout the years, from 'love train' to 'put our heads together', both completely different areas but brilliant in their own way.
Gonna check it out, thanx for the tip!!! |
