When you are down or depressed, what music do you listen to?

Do you listen to things that try to cheer you up?

Or things that suit your depressed mood....

Or.. music that is "comfortable". That is what I tend to do. I go back to things that make me feel like I'm wearing my favorite comfy clothes.

"Zuma" by Neil Young & Crazy Horse is high on my list. I also reach for it when I'm down. Listening to "Zuma" is like slipping on an old comfortable pair of slippers.

I don't listen to music. I go shopping and buy something I really WANT. Does the trick everytime.

I have nothing but unreserved love for that album. It took me quite a long time to crack it, partly because she's so vocally quirky but mostly due to the fact that the songs are just so unstructured and all-over-the-place.

Apparently she released a follow-up album a few years ago - have either of you heard it?

my story is similar to yours. it took a long time before the whole album grabbed me, but i kept going back for "To Cry About" and eventually everything took hold.

i thought the follow up were just Christmas songs? i guess she started teaching or something that's why she hasn't been too prolific. lol

SenseOfDoubt

Earlier this year, I was walking through some kind of depression. During that period Prince has helped me a lot, as did Rick James a little bit later.

Sometimes I go back to some old jazz recordings, like classic Bill Evans (his Riverside releases), Miles Davis mid 50s - mid 60s, John Coltrane, JOe Henderson etc.

Generally I start to listen to music that I heard back in my teenage days; this music brings up so many nice memories; feels bitter sometimes, but it helps me.

Your screen named reminded me of another good CD... . "All Saints" by David Bowie, including the track "Sense of Doubt."

Great mellow instrumental music.

I like listening to Death In June's best of collection, 'DISCriminate'. It's very bleak.

Gitane Demone's 'Am I Wrong' is another good one. A very sad album.

I looked for these on iTunes, but they don't have them. They seem interesting... what are they like? I may need to take a trip to Tower Records to see if i can track them down.
