Elvis Costello: I Want You

Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell
I don't think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death
I can't say anymore than "I love you"
Everything else is a waste of breath

I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said "Young man I do believe you're dying"
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate
I want you
It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
I want you
it's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tattered compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
"I want you"
I want you
The truth can't hurt you it's just like the dark
It scares you witless
But in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me then we'll let it drop
I want you
I'm afraid I won't know where to stop
I want you
I'm not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down
I want you
Oh no my darling not with that clown
I want you
I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
I want you
I want you
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I'm going to say it once again 'til I instill it
I know I'm going to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you

bawl oh, especially when you're really feeling it....
If you have to ask, it's more than worth it.

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face"
Sung by Roberta Flack

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies, my love

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move through my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command, my love

The first time ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine

The first time ever I saw your face
your face -- your face -- your face

This song used to make me so happy I would cry, now it makes me so sad I cry beacuse it makes me think of a certain person who has deleted me from his life.....
sad

absolutely cry
If you have to ask, it's more than worth it.

I tear up at the end of that song because I know exactly what he's singing.

Guns N' Roses- "Don't Cry"

Talk To Me Softly,
There's Something In Your Eyes,
Don't Hang Your Head In Sorrow,
And Please Don't Cry,
I Know How You Feel Inside,
I've Been There Before,
Something Is Changing Inside You,
And Don't You Know?

CHORUS:
Don't You Cry Tonight,
I Still Love You Baby,
Don't You Cry Tonight,
Don't You Cry Tonight,
There's A Heaven Above You Baby,
And Don't You Cry Tonight.

Give Me A Whisper,
And Give Me A Sigh,
Give Me A Kiss Before You
Tell Me Goodbye,
Don't You Take It So Hard Now,
And Please Don't Take It So Bad,
I'll Still Be Thinking Of You,
And The Times We Had.

CHORUS:
And Don't You Cry Tonight,
Don't You Cry Tonight,
Don't You Cry Tonight,
There's A Heaven Above You Baby,
And Don't You Cry Tonight.

[Guitar Solo]

And Please Remember,
That I Never Lied,
And Please Remember,
How I Felt Inside,
You Gotta Make It Your Own Way,
But You'll Be Alright,
You'll Feel Better Tomorrw,
Come The Morning Light

CHORUS:
And Don't You Cry Tonight
And Don't You Cry Tonight
And Don't You Cry Tonight
There's A Heaven Above You Baby
And Don't You Cry
Don't You Ever Cry
Don't You Cry Tonight
Baby Maybe Someday
Don't You Cry
Don't You Ever Cry
Don't You Cry
Tonight

John Michael Montgomery

The Little Girl

Her parents never took the young girl to Church
Never spoke of His name
Never read her His word
Two non-believers walkin' lost in this world
Took their baby with them
What a sad little girl

Her Daddy drank all day and Mommy did drugs
Never wanted to play
Or give kisses and hugs
She'd watch the TV and sit there on the couch
While her Mom fell asleep
And her Daddy went out

And the drinking and the fighting
Just got worse every night
Behind their couch she'd be hiding
Oh, what a sad little life

And like it always does
The bad just got worse
With every slap and every curse
Until her Daddy in a drunk rage one night
Used a gun on her Mom
And then took his life

And some people from the city
Took the girl far away
To a new Mom and a new Dad
Kisses and hugs everyday

Her first day of Sunday school the teacher walked in
And a small little girl stared at a picture of Him
She said, "I know that Man up there on that cross
I don't know His name but I know He got off

Cause he was there in my old house
And held me close to His side
As I hid there behind our couch
The night that my parents died"

Gotta agree with whoever mentioned Annie Lennox' "Why". The lyrics and delivery are devastating. "Love Song For A Vampire" is equally haunting. Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You?" also chokes me up, especially first two verses. Dire Straits "Why Worry" makes me want to burst into tears. And Lionel Richie's "Stuck On You" is quite touching.

This is a serious question(for anyone)...not mocking or anything: When you list these "songs that make you cry"...do they really make you cry or it more a fig of speech and you just consider them sad songs?

Thanks gem.

My thought, at first is that you guys are posting songs that you would categorize as "sad"...like if you had to label them or something.

After reading some of the posts, my thought leaned towards: "These org people are really sensitive"

Haven't met the song yet that could make me cry.
So now I'm thinking: maybe it's me.

Music can sometimes give me shivers, make me feel happy or sad, or make my eyes wet, but the only time i really cried was when listening to Nightswimming by REM a years ago.

The lyrics are about the loss of youth, realisizing youre getting older and that some experiences are laying behind you. Its a very tender, wistfull lyric dealing with nostalgic memories. The music of the song is sheer beautifull (only piano, vocals and strings).

I listened to this song when i was on a breakingpoint in my life and somehow the lyrics did resonate very deeply with my personal situation. I cried troughout the whole song, a very intense experience. Somehow that was just the 'right' song at the 'right' moment.

The lyrics

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I'm not sure all these people understand.
It's not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
of recklessness and water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
September's coming soon.
I'm pining for the moon.
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night.

ONE TIN SOLDIER
(The Legend of Billy Jack)
words and music by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter
Copyright © 1969 by ABC / Dunhill Music, Inc.

Listen children to a story that was written long ago
'bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley folk below.
On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone,
and the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill
asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom: "With our brothers we will share
all the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger; mount your horses, draw your sword,
and they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure on the mountain, dark and red,
turned the stone and looked beneath it. "Peace on earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

I just cried reading the lyrics and hearing the little song track from the website.
