Music snobbery can be deceptive.

Back in the '80s, while I was raving about how great SOTT was, I'm sure there were other artists and projects that adults swore were far better. I didn't really start listening to Jimi Hendrix until I was about 16...

It's cyclical.

nod Same here. I'll be 20 in 1,5 months( biggrin ), so not all "youngsters" are totally oblivious creatures. But too many are, far too many! I mean, there are actually people who never have heard of Prince! And stuff before the 80's, forget it. But I think it often depends on your parents, your childhood forms you, and if they weren't that interested in music when you were a little kid, then "tough luck".

Yep nod Both my Mum and Dad were into music, more old stuff really, 60s-80s. If anything they taught me that new music is rubbish! lol My Dad forced his soul and disco on me from an early age, and taught me about the difference between good music and bad - not just his opinion, but the general view of people who buy more than the top ten. It stuck shrug

Im glad there are more like me! I grew up thinking I was a freak! A cool freak, but a freak all the same wink

Nothing wrong with liking what they like. Different people get different things out of music. Some folks just like it for pure fun and enjoyment. It's all good.

Real music is dying, Music companys just want £££ or $$$ these days, doesn't matter about their rep, and these kids are a great example of why companys make £££/$$$ because they are so easy to please, just give them a CD with a rapper or singer slagging other people off, with cheap sounding music that isn't even real intsruments..... but hey ho, as long as I have my Prince/Sly Cd's im cool..

In the late 50's, when kids were listening to Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly, the older generation thought real music was dying and that the newer music coming through was complete and utter shit.

In the 60's, when kids were listening to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, the older generation thought real music was dying and that the newer music coming through was complete and utter shit.

In the late 70's, when kids were listening to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, the older generation thought real music was dying and that the newer music coming through was complete and utter shit.

In the 80's, when kids were listening to Michael Jackson, Prince and The Madonna, the older generation thought real music was dying and that the newer music coming through was complete and utter shit.

In the late 90's, when kids were listening to The Backstreet Boys, Aqua and Britney Spears, the older generation thought real music was dying and that the newer music coming through was complete and utter shit.

Now in the 2000's, with kids listening to Eminem, 50 Cent and Beyonce, the older generation (who are now the Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna fans) think real music is dying and that the newer music coming through is complete and utter shit.

See where I'm going?

The only difference between now and the 50s-80s is that it's not only the older generation who hate new music, it's also the kids, and I think that says something. For the first time there's just as many kids (Generation Y) as there are adults (Generation X) who think new music is shit. This (IMO) tells us that new music is going down hill and is in fact shit and it better get better real quick. On that note, I think this year and the better half of last year saw a great increase in quality of music. I think over the next year of two music will get better and it allready has gotten better since the 2003 musical depression.
