WHAT IS JAZZ? ROPEADOPE HOB LA 4/12/2006

The show was killer. Bobby Previte played a short set of solo e-drums; generated lots of different voicings.
After an intermission from DJ Logic, Charlie Hunter trio was up. Phenomenal; More great stuff.

McBRide and his band hit was a awesome ferocity. First on acoustic and switching to fretless 4 string and backed & forth. Played bop tunes and some fusion funk (heard a lot of Jaco). The whole band was smokin'. Terreon Gully was just plain ol "nas-tay", Geoff Keezer played his ass off on the keyboards and Ron Blake was masterful on saxes. Logic joined in for a funky medley. McBRide quoted "Reach For It" cuz George Duke was in the room somewhere.

I copped McBRide's Live at NY's TONIC disc as soon as I walked in. Young dude next to me saw what I had and ran over to cop. I held my copy up when McBride was talkng about it onstage and he said he really appreciated both of us buying the disc and he'd have $30 in his pocket tonight. The 3 disc live set is due out May 2, 2006, but it was being sold at the shows (which ends tonight in San Diego).

Hung back after the show to get some sigs and Jason Moran popped in, too bad he didn't join onstage.
