Can James Brown make a decent record today? A friend and I were listening to "I'm Real" earlier tonight and this question came to mind. "I'm Real" wasn't a bad collaboration with Full Force, but could James make a decent record today with the right collaborators and producers if he really tried?
Mind you, I haven't listened to "The Next Step" from 2002 all the way. Seems like I'm not missing anything there. My friend thinks he could, but he's just discovering James' stuff, so I don't think he can really see the big picture. I doubt James could pull something off today, whether it be a mainstream-conscious record or otherwise. Thoughts? Ooh, little darlin' if you're

I dont fink he needs to go mainstream again, he is a legend, and i enjoy listening to all his music...
But a lot of kids dont even know who he is, so would U watch an old man on MTV that u never heard of? Never mainstream, but a decent record? yes! Keenmeister

unless it was strictly horns and bass backing him, then he can forget it... I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

2005 - Black Eyed Peas' Monkey Business album
Track: "They Don't Want Music" - featuring James Brown Sounds pretty good to me! (Though I'm not a fan of the BEP)

If music had DNA, a lot of it would have to rightfully call James "daddy" 'cause here's a part of him in the way music is heard/understood today. He's done his part and he'll continue to even if he never makes another song. Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? - Stupify

Hummmm... James is TOO old school. He cut his chops in the 50's man.....I LOVE Jb but he is done.

It's highly possible. I really loved Al Green's "I Can't Stop" from 2002 (never gave his recent offering a try, though). It felt like more of a throwback to the fifities and sixities, and not a redo of his hitmaking style of the seventies. Very cool.

No doubt he can, i just doubt if people want to work with him.
But i think with the right producers and songwriters (quantic, lanois, quannum crew, lambchop) he can make another masterpiece like 'the blues' album back in the early 70's.

Honestly I don't think James can make a record today. Cats like Bootsy and George Clinton have always remained hip to was it going on today. I would not say the same for James.

....exactly why I think with the right producers James can.
James got a voice no one else has, plenty of examples in the recent history with people like Johnny Cash, Candi Staton and Salamon Burke proved some people still can make good records, better than plenty of new 'stars'. Even Neil Diamond's recent cd has it's moments (produced by Rick Rubin). A voice like James doesn't belong in the past while he's still alive. [Edited 4/18/06 8:39am] [Edited 4/18/06 8:39am]

I would love to see him pull it off but I would NOT bet any money on it.
