Before '85? Bite your tongue!!! Just called me old...

lol

I go with the real-instrumentation, real-vocalists definition but add the proviso that it must be played extremely well, well enough to influence others' style and development. Hence the frequent and credible referencing of the following artists (and others) as exemplary of "old school."

Aretha
Sly
James
Mick & the Stones
John/Paul/George/Ringo
Janis
Teddy P.
James
Gladys
Marvin
Patsy
Al
Gamble & Huff
Miles
Hank
Cash & The Carters
Cream

etc.

For some people "old school" is almost anything that's no longer in current rotation.

BET's 106 & Park "Old School Joint Of The Day" used to crack me up. Sometimes they played 90s shit on there!

lol

to me old school is the Gap Band, Pointer Sisters, Rick James, old MJ, EWF,...and then old school can also mean stuff from 89-92 like MC Hammer, Paula Abdul, "Vogue," Kriss Kross, Vanilla Ice, "Lets Talk About Sex," "I Wanna Sex You Up,"...you know, that vibe
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me
