I've had Marvin Gaye's Box Set for about four years, and STILL can't stop playin' DISC 3, let alone, the other three. smile
I would also name Prince's box set, but IMO, he has so many songs that exceed those that were selected. PEACE

i don't know if i consider the Hits 1 and 2/the B Sides a box set...

i'd have to say it's a tie between the Police Message In A Box and Jeff Beck's Beckology. the Who set is a close third.

Amen to the Marvin Gaye! Disc 3 is my favorite, too, if only because of "Come Get to This"!

I'm also diggin on the Santana box set...and Stevie Wonder...and Rolling Stone's 25 year set...and Soul hits of the 70's set! I have Smokey Robinson, but don't play it.

Maybe maybe maybe I could learn to love...I mean the right way, I mean the only way...if I was just closer to my higher self...

Anxiety

David Bowie's "Sound+Vision" box set was simply amazing. The packaging was out of this world, and the selection of hits, fan favorites, live tracks and rarities was perfect.

The first box set I bought on CD in 1986.

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band Live/1975-85

Hopefully, we get a live CD from Prince this year. It's been long overdue.

I'm split between Otis Redding and Velvet Undergorund.
Actually, they're the only box sets I own.
But they never fall out of my permenent rotation.

I have a lot of box sets. Aretha and JB have 2 of the best ones ever compiled. I have the Steely Dan box too, and Muddy Waters and BB King. As much as I love Stevie it wouldn't benefit me to have his box set, because there are no unreleased songs on it, and it's basically a greatest hits box with nothing more added for a hardcore fan. I'd rather just own his reissues of his best albums. I'll most likely end up getting at least one of Led Zeppelin's box sets, the first one probably. It's about a decade old now. And I probably already have most of the material from it on their reissued albums. Curtis Mayfield's 3 cd set is excellent too. When it comes to jazz I like buying the reissued albums instead of boxes...but that could potentially change when it comes to Miles.

Here are some of my favorite box sets...

***Earth Wind and Fire "The Eternal Dance"(1992)---This box set is a dream come true for the diehard EW&F fan! It contains 3 CDs filled with the hits, alternate versions, rare live versions, outtakes, previously unreleased interludes and other goodies. What more could you ask for?

***"Have A Nice Decade: The 70s Pop Culture Box" (1998)---If you loved the 70s as much as I do,you MUST have this amazing 7-CD (!!) box set that collects many of the best songs from that era.Available on Rhino Records.

***Santana "The Dance of the Rainbow Serpent"(1995)---This beautifully packaged 3-CD box set is incredible! It contains the well-known hits ("Evil Ways","Black Magic Woman",etc),but it also contains Carlos' jazzier, more experimental music (most of which came from his solo albums). There are also some cool collaborations with Larry Graham,Vernon Reid,Weather Report and John Lee Hooker.

***"The Disco Box"(1999)---Yes,70s Disco music was much-maligned.But,as this stunning 4-CD set proves, there was ALOT of great music from this era. There aren't too many rarities here (get both volumes of the "54" soundtrack for lesser known Disco hits),but you do get the cream of the crop.Interestingly,Anita Ward's 1979 hit "Ring My Bell" is presented here in a different, raw version that sounds like an early demo of the song.On Rhino Records.
