Remember them? They had a couple of hits: "Mr. Wendel" and "Tennessee", to name a few. I used to really like their music a lot, it always was catchy and had a message that was worth listening to. I imagine that the leader of the group, Speech, was not too pleased when he heard that there was a new TV show that had the same name as the musical group that he was a large part of.

I wasn't a huge fan of the group or the album, but I did like "Natural" and "Tennessee."

That's right. I've read that the Beastie's 'Paul's Boutique' album would be impossible to record today. All the samples with all those people having to be paid--the budget would be out of this world.

Ironically, or perhaps appropriately, the practice was curbed due to two musicians among the most revered by hip-hop: George Clinton and James Brown. They took legal action in the early 90's that made a lot of people take notice.

But now, only the acts with the biggest budgets can use prominent samples.

Of course, there are several producers and artists -- the late J Dilla, Madlib, and MF Doom come to mind -- that rely heavily on obscure samples from old R&B songs and even animated shows.

I have Speech 'first solo album and it's very good, I don't know why his solo career wasn't succesful, there was a terrific track very Prince like, I think that' it's "Feel Real" or something like this.. I've got to find this in my mess.

I loved the second studio album Zingalamaduni the most. And for whatever the reasons thats the one that didn't blow up.

great group! if you check their site they have a new album out - i got it and it sounds like they picked up right where they left off back then! favorite song so far from the new album: Luxury.

I really dug them a lot but never did get their second album....always wanted too.
