Good thread.
Wonder if i'd get any replies if i did top 10 newjack albums Iam actually surprised at how many love neo soul. U guys must be old As a hater of neo soul, iam glad u guys say it ain't a new genre. Its basically ripping off old philly 70's stuff along with marvin gaye 70's era etc... Its all downtempo too. Its also very snobbish, and christphertracyparade is an orger who is a snob to. Where is he I like music that has a bottom. That has layers of keyboards, vocals etc... i dont dig the exclusive small jazz club atmosphere these artists have. It just seems too easy, and even though iam missing the point, it all sounds the same. Its just not commercial enough for me. i guess because of its use of real instruments, it ain't gonna date.

Gotta give Neo Soul props to:
If ANYONE can find that 2nd Cherokee release "Soul Parade" PLEASE let a brotha know! It's like trying to find a hooker teachin' Bible Study class. Also, Geno Young worked on N'Dambi's 2 releases and he also did some production for Badu and Carmen Rodgers as well. N'Dambi, Carmen, and Geno are all based out of Dallas Texas. But my love, newjackswing, was more of a mix of minni funk, old gap records, hiphop and current pop, and it deserves more props by the media then neo soul. A genre that got way too much attension.

New Jack is played. That's what happens when you build a sound around a gimmick and no lasting substance. It was good when high-top fades were in but now that shit is laughable whenever you hear it on the radio. Dated and stale. You have weird tastes though I've noticed. Critics still shit on those records because they get reminded of all those fashions, arsenio hall, martin, etc....that all played off newjack as a sound. Thats how importmant new jack was. And thus people got sick of it. It was also quite a boastful sound. Very in your face, everything neo soul isnt LOL It does sound very odd now. And young kids would proberly, if anything, think its something new. I played some obscure newjack cut when around a mates house, and she thought it was new. True, newjack was not about real instruments, but dont be like christphertracyparade and play the high ground here. It was still music, and like all genres, there were newjack pop artists, hiphop pop artists, etc... Freestlye gets more love then newjack. And i love some freestlye, but i dont get the hate for newjack. So its all programmed, so is pharrels stuff.

Look at pharrel, who did he learn off, teddy riley. All the ushers, chris browns, ne-yo's, they are all newjackers. The attitude is there. The sound is different, but the influence is there. newjack mixed hiphop beats, with rnb lyrcis, to pop hooks. Usher does the same, neptunes do the same etc... before that, u had minni funk, which was like a prototype of newjack. It was funky, but was often still midtempo and obviously, no rap production to it. No raps in songs. Newjack was the next step. Ushers shit doesnt have a name, but it could called some lame shit like neo newjack. Attitude there. Rhythm is there. The pop hook is there.

There is NO New Jack sound in Pharrel's music and NO New Jack sound in ANY of those artists you listed. I just think you WANT there to be and that you've convinced yourself they have a "New Jack" sound. Do you REALLY wanna know what New Jack was? I'll tell you: All Teddy did (Along with Gene Griffin, largely recognized as the real creator of New Jack) was add an extra bass drum beat where there normally wouldn't be one and relied heavily on the synth/keys. There was no "attitude" lol. New Jack wasn't special. It was NEW. That's about it. It was gimmicky and fun while it was here, but it's old and done and NO one is trying to incorporate that shit into their sound today. I have no idea about newjack technically, but come on, rnb changed when newjack came around. But as i said, newjack pretty much morphed into hiphop soul (mary j blige, jodeci etc...). Of course the sound has gone. But what it did to rnb, is still felt. Shit, even dressing well is still seen today. Newjack wans't about looking like run dmc, it was about dressing smart, and belonging where the upperclass are, even though ur from the streets U obviously know ur shit, but u should know teddy basicaly fused hiphop and rnb together. And tell me usher dont do that? It wasn't gimmicky either. Whats so gimmicky about keith sweats "i want her"? The keyboard break, the arpeggios, the coda. Newjack even affected dress codes. White people loved it too, and, unlike hiphop, it was all about having a good time. Shit, u could even say it made black people feel good about themselves. No shootings, no violent lyrics.

Naw, Saadiq is the Godfather of Neo Soul. When he was in 3T they were laying the groundwork for it back in 93 and then when he produced "Lady" on D'Angelo's Brown Sugar album that pretty much ushered in the Neo Soul era. Amp came later but still under the same sound. Neo Soul is R&B in the vein of the old soul singers. It's jazzy, it's soulful, the lyrics are more mature and more meaningful than the Jagged Edges and 112s and R. Kellys out there. It's musicianship and statement music. It's love and romance and politics and social commentary. Overall, it's real. Living to die and I'll die to live again - 360 degrees - comprehend

Agreed. Iam not hatin' on u bytheway, and its hard to see what newjack has done, as people refuse or just dont realize to see it in modern rnb music. Cats like jay z and even justn timberlake, grew up on newjack and are in a way, newjackers at heart. They dont make songs with loud ass snares or layers of keyboards though, its hard to explain.
