But I have to also give credit to Prince as being the God of it all that influenced Saadiq, D' and others.

That's what I was goint to post. Go head on, player!

Yeah, people slept on Gospedelic. It wins a Grammy and doesn't get ANY luv after that. Shame. People should get Gospeldelic JUST for the duet with him and D'Angelo. - Smokin'!

I LOVE Raphael Saadiq and I could not get into Gospeldelic. I thought it was weak for Mr. Saadiq. I really expected more. I even tried to wait on it and go back to give it a fresh listen and never connected with it. Maybe I'll see if I can find it this weekend.....

Yeah, it wasn't as cohesive as it could have been, but there are like 4-6 cuts on there that are official jams. But if you really wanna get into Ray Ray, get Lucy Pearl, it's his best work to date.

See, I think this is where my disdain with the dilineation sort of begins.

All you say here is 100% true. And, as you've said, we HAVE to give Meshell some credit, too. Yet before Meshell and Sadiq and Tony Tony Tone, there was Prince and the whole Minneapolis scene. Before that scene, there was Roger & Zapp. Before them, there were the Ohio Players, Parliament-Funkadelic, the Philly Sound... and on and on. There's always been a steady evolution of innovative black music. So when exactly did the sound we love now become "Neo?" I'm with the likes of Jill Scott and Maxwell in that I rather think of these latest acts as simply keeping it real, as you say, with what we've always known as good-old soul music... without the hyphenations. If anything, I think the other manufactured crap we were inundated with on radio and BET should take a derivative name. The Jagged Edges, H-Towns and Chris Browns that you mention.

Ok, the term Neo Soul means "The NEW Generation of Soul Singers" so that's where the confusion comes in at. It's not NEW music, just a new generation of singers maintaining and being the curators of the sound.

I think the initial rumblings of the Neo Soul sound era happened right aroundt 1993 with the release of Meshell's "Plantation Lullabies" on the woman's side and on the men's side "Sons of Soul" by the Tonies that same year, and then 2 years later we get D'Angelo and a year after that we get Badu and that's when the Neo Soul era was officiialy ushered in.

BNH would be that fence of New Jazz & R&B or Jazz&B, but can easily be held within the Neo Soul area. Jamiroqui ...I really can't tell you. He's more so Reggae-ish to me.

hmmm If it's a generational thing as opposed to a musical thing, I suppose I can get with that. I just wouldn't want to think the conscientious, instrument-playing, quality artists have, in effect, given away their birthright to that lackluster, sample-filled barcode product the kids are being hit with on commercial radio.

[Edited 4/6/06 18:03pm]

And therein lies 2/3 of the problem: Radio and Listener - Radio dictates what the kids hear and eventually they will like it and demand more of it, then the 3rd party - The artists - hop in and supply the demand for the listener to consume.

Just like the old adage that if you feed people hamburger all their lives they will never complain but once you feed them steak it's a whole new ballgame!

I love Mint, but I have to agree, I don't think that they are in the major category of Neo soul, but they do have their own "grown folk" music thing going on.

I think everyone has hit the nail on the head:

Van Hunt
Dwele
Erykah
Jilly from Philly
D'Angelo
Bilal
and much more....

I know someone mentioned the "brand new heavies" but i think they are more on the jazzy funk type music...same goes for Jamiroquai and I faithfully listen to both bands.....

This here is a great thread!! biggrin Great discussion on good music!!! thumbs up!
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

There is SO much wrongness about your list, but the 3 I bolded: PM Dawn - They werent even close to pop rap, let alone Neo Soul. Xavier has a new album out already. And Color Me Badd? eek

I think I need to send you to Neo Soul School - FAST! lol lol

I hate the "neo" term too..so I'm going with "90's soul".

Meshell - "Plantation Lullabies" - the 1st "90's soul" CD."
DJ Britt - The one with "DJ Save My Life"..(I forgot the name of it)
D'Angelo - "Voodoo"
Erykah Badu - "Mama's Gun"
Chico DeBarge - The one that he did when he got out of jail (forgot the name)
Meshell - "Peace Beyond Passion"
Jill Scott - "Words And Sounds-Vol 1"
Eric Benet - "True To Myself"
Davina - 1998
Christion's debut - 1998

Honorable mention..Lewis Taylor..everything.
