Devote A Thread: Joni Mitchell

"...and it was Joni singing, Help Me, I Think I'm Fallin'"

I thought it would b nice 2 devote a thread 2 someone I know almost nothing about...with hopes 2 change that.

I recently learned from reading the credits of ONA, (and from my fellow .Orgers) that Joni wrote the song, "A Case Of U"...it was interesting 2 learn, but has left me wondering...

Now, I only know of Joni thru Prince...I mean, I've never owned one of her recordings, and I've only heard her sing a couple of times, and I've known of Prince's respect 4 Joni 4 many, many years. I know Prince thinks the world of her...tell me, is the feeling mutual? Does Joni think the world of Prince?

I know my fellow .Orgers won't let me down...could ya spread the love?

Also very kewl; in an Interview (the mag) interview, Joni Mitchell was asked what she thought of Prince.
And she said something about his big curious eyes at her concerts.
It was YEARS ago, around 1990, but if you can lay your hands on that issue...the pictures are awsome too.

It's interesting. On the surface you wouldn't think the macho types aren't big fans of Joni. But John Cougar loves her music to death, as did Led Zeppelin. Zep wrote "Going To California" as an homage to Joni.

Janet Jackson sampled Joni's vocal from "Big Yellow Taxi" can't remember for which song, it's from the Velvet Rope album. The first single.

If I can dig up some quotes from Joni I'll do so for you tomorrow, June7.

BLUE is the best. Get it now if you don't already got it. I also really liked Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, especially "Paprika Plains" -- don't ask me why (probably the poeticism and the piano). Is "poeticism" a word? "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" and "Court & Spark" are also a couple of her greatest. She is one of the few artists that I can listen to at any time and feel better. Not even Prince can do that for me. The song "River" (from BLUE) is probably my favorite. I have great memories of singing the entire BLUE album over and over again with an old girlfriend of mine as we took turns driving to Las Vegas in the early hours of the morning. Neither of us knew the other had memorized the entire album until that day. Too cool.

"Got Till It's Gone" is the Song.Janet said that Her Brother Randy turned Her on to Joni's work.Seal is a Big fan of Her's as well.Rick James mentioned crashing at Her Pad back when Him&Neil Young were starting out back in the Mid-60's.Wayne Shorter has been on Her Records thru the Years.Joni Mitchell Herself has said that She thought Miles Davis was Very Innovative.I enjoy Her "Blue" Album very relaxing&Mellow.

Joni likes Prince, although I read somewhere that she referred to him in the words "he's a strange duck but I like him" or something to that effect. Anyway, I love the expression "a strange duck".

June7.Try he record COURT AND SPARK. It contains her big song "Help ME!", "Free Man In Paris is a great song too on this landmark recording. This is a masterpiece and her poetic lines are sheer brillance. The sonic backdrop on this will amaze you as well. You really can't go wrong with any of her early 70's records. I have a few of her stuff I have to repurchase as a matter of fact. She is one of the most important and influential female artists of the 20th century.

Knowing some Joni Mitchell songs always came in handy when hittin' on white chicks.
This babe threw me for a loop when she was banging' with jazz fusion cats like TomScott,
LA EXPRESS, Pat Metheny, Jaco and Wayne Shorter. Can't say I liked her MINGUS
album much, but the band live was fantastic!!! My faves are HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS
and the live (LASERDISC was awesome !!!) SHADOWS AND LIGHT.

Thank u...I should have taken my own advice, and did a search on this topic!

Funny, I don't recall seeing that thread...but the answers r just what I was looking 4. I guess I'm gonna have 2 check out the "Blue" cd.

Still, one question remains unanswered.

What does Joni think of Prince?

I remember one time Joni was asked what she thought of "that innovator, Prince"? I'm not sure, but I recall her reply wasn't that complimentary...something like, he's great, but an innovator he's not...is this correct?

Yes, she said something like Hendrix was a great innovator and that Miles was a great sound innovator, but Prince was more like a good hybrid. It was from a Rolling Stone interview she did in the 80's. I'll have to find the article.

Perhaps her greatest accomplishment is that she knows enough to perform "A Case of You" in its complete form.

The quote in your sig is from Willie Dixon, not Page & Plant (who plagirized Dixon's blues song "You Need Love").

Just thought you'd like to know, in case you hadn't heard).

MAN!! I got the Chess WILLIE DIXON box set about 10 years ago
and my mouth literally dropped to the floor! The lyrics are exactly the same!
What differs are the recording of electric instruments, Page's guitar solo and
Plant's vocals add a bit of adlib. Based on this, I give them credit for an innovative cover.
They settled the suit with Dixon's estate, but Led Zep's management kept it real quiet.

yeah there's an issue w/ "The Lemon Song", but I don't rememebr the details right now.

Killing Floor.
I should'a quit you, long time ago...

Zep stole a lot of lyrics here and there.

Also Albert King's The Hunter was purloined a bit for "How Many More Times" too.

June7, I'm still trying to find some JM stuff. I don't know if I have the interview you bring up when she was asked about Prince. But it's no big deal really, it was more along the lines of her not thinking he was an innovator, but a hybrid. Which isn't entirely correct. She never dissed him, if that's the impression you got.
