Damn! No wonder I couldn't get that Nirvana or Snoop Dogg album on 8-track!
Anyway, I remember growing up with a portable record player and a portable 8-track player along with 45 rpm vinyl records. I think Ronco was a one-stop shop for all of this. I know the company was better known for the Pocket Fisherman and the Veg-O-Matic, but they competed with K-Tel for the top 40 super hit compilations. However, my brother and I got our first portable cassette recorder in 1980, which we mostly used to record songs off the radio and make silly tapes of ourselves trying to sing and do stupid stuff. Once the 8-track went by the wayside, I had no option except to buy cassettes. I didn't buy my first CD player until the fall of 1989, which was my senior year of college. What's really nostalgic for me is how much the record stores and stereo stores have changed over the years. I remember seeing walls of amplifiers, speakers, tape players and stereo systems which could take up a wall of space in the house. These days, thanks to the iPod, everything is compact, and the biggest sound systems are actually geared towards computers instead of home entertainment systems.

Welllll,... ...that's if you don't count (admittedly smaller numbers in comparison) the Audiophile market. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

They're being accepted by some because of the *"up-sampling" capabilities of the hi-res (SACD/DVD-Audio) players. I've heard comments like, "My conventional CDs have never sounded better." *If you really want to know - http://www.thetadigital.c...mpling.htm tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Pops had an 8 track in the Olds. Often, songs would be cut across tracks and there would be a fairly long moment of dead air when the tape reached the end of a loop. I HATED THAT. I know that happend on the Earth, Wind and Fire 8-track we had. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on

I always bought vinyl because I just couldn't see spending money on a tape when I could make one myself from the vinyl. However, when it came to tapes, I definately preferred 8 tracks. The sound was much more powerful on the tape and there was far less tape hiss than cassettes. Cassettes had Dolby but the players with it were too expensive and I never noticed the difference when I finally got one. Also, with an 8 track, you could play it on the stereo and really shake the walls. Cassette players during that time were mainly on boom boxes only and stereos that had them were too expensive. 8 tracks had their flaws though. For instance, you had to listen to a complete program to play a particular song again. There were fast forward buttons on some of the stereos but those were too expensive. I eventually was able to get an 8 track recorder and then the damn tapes went out of style a year or two later. I think if they had advanced the players by adding fast forward, rewind, and pause buttons, 8 tracks would have definately been a better alternative when vinyl went out of style rather than cassettes because the sound was so much stronger. I never bought cassettes (except for blank ones) until vinyl became extinct. Keep in mind, CD players were around in the very late 1980s but the players were expensive as hell and the CDs themselves costed more than the alternatives. I never got my first CD player until 1994 so I am stuck with cassettes from the early 1990s and cassettes really age badly. I don't remember sound ever dropping or fading on 8 tracks so they probably would have aged better. However, they didn't last long enough for me to find out once I got into them fully. Anyway, which was your choice? . . [Edited 4/4/06 1:06am] My daddy had an 8 Track player in the car and 2 in the house that recorded. I used to love to hear "Off The Wall" in the car.
