EMINEM: 4.1 Million...and counting! (Nelly Still On Top, Enter RHCP) U knew it was gonna happen...I mean, damn!
(edited 4 ur in-joyment) Rapper Eminem Sells 1.3 Million Albums in U.S. Wed Jun 5, 5:50 PM ET By Dean Goodman LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - American youth rushed to the rescue of the ailing music industry last week as more than a million fans scooped up copies of bad-boy rapper Eminem's latest album. According to sales data issued on Wednesday, Eminem's keenly awaited third album, "The Eminem Show," sold 1.32 million copies in the week ended June 2, its first full week in stores. It is the first album to crack seven figures since boy-band 'N Sync's "Celebrity" debuted with sales of 1.9 million copies last August. But the record books will place an asterisk next to the 28-year-old Detroit rapper's name. "The Eminem Show" managed to sell a massive 284,534 copies during the previous chart week on the basis of just one day's sales, a figure that was high enough to propel him to No. 1 that week. In an unprecedented and last-minute development, Eminem's Interscope Records label was forced to bring the album's release forward by nine days to a Sunday (May 26), the last day of sales tracking firm SoundScan's chart week, to combat bootlegging. Albums in the United States are typically released on a Tuesday. EMINEM EXCITEMENT Piracy -- primarily via file-swapping programs on the Internet -- has been cited as is one of the reasons for the depressed state of the music industry. Global sales fell 5 percent last year, the first drop since the compact disc was introduced in 1983. But "The Eminem Show" has delivered a much-needed jolt to the recording business. "It's put a lot more excitement into the business," said Violet Brown, director of urban music at the Wherehouse Music chain. The album is the chain's biggest release of 2002, and its best seller since Eminem's last album, "The Marshall Mathers LP," debuted with 1.8 million copies nationwide in 2000, Brown said. (Marshall Bruce Mathers III is Eminem's real name.) Competition from bootlegging -- as well as other lures for the leisure dollar -- is forcing labels and retailers to come up with more innovative ways to sell albums besides just stacking them on shelves. Wherehouse, for example, gave away a free CD-ROM packed with such goodies as an Eminem cartoon and movie trailers to the first 100,000 buyers of "The Eminem Show." (now, that's marketing!) This complemented Interscope's own efforts to put out a value-added package: the first 2 million copies of "The Eminem Show" sold in the United States will contain a limited-edition DVD, featuring behind-the-scenes and performance footage, as well as an interview and a cartoon. (Prince, u listening?) For the first time, the CD booklet also contains Eminem's lyrics, making it easier for his fans to sing along with tirades against Vice President Dick Cheney (news - web sites)'s wife Lynne; 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick; deluded parents and an assortment of people he terms "bitches" and "faggots." Eminem, whose lyrics have indicated a awareness of his commercial appeal -- "I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley, to do black music so selfishly," he intones on one song -- was thrilled with the sales, said his manager, Paul Rosenberg. "He was really concerned that the bootlegging was going to hurt him a lot, and we had to do a lot of damage control with him ... making sure that he doesn't lose his mind while he's doing this record on whether anyone's going to buy it," Rosenberg said. --- Meanwhile, I'm still downloading it! fucking edits! He still didn't break N'Sync's 1 week total of 2.5 million copies.

And if the music industry thinks Eminem is going to save them, they're in worst shape than I thought.
Prince was right about the music industry. And he's been talking about how bad it is years ago.

Isn't it sad and scary that someone that raps (I refuse to call it singing), about hurting women comminting crimes, etc not to mention what junk it is and anyone can do what he does, sells so much? I can't believe that this many parents and you know there are some, buy this crap for their children.Who was it that said God sure made a lot of idiots?

What's with all the anti-Eminem talk? I'm not a HUGE fan of him,but I gotta admit,he has talent.Y'all seem kinda bitter that his CD is selling so well. Were you this angry when 'Purple Rain' was topping the charts?

Not only do I not like Eminem, I hate all that rap stuff... I only wish that real musicians and singers would come back into the spotlight and save us from the plight of rap. SUPERJOINT RITUAL - http://www.superjointritual.com

I just saw him do an outstanding per4mance of "Without Me" on the MTV Movie Awards...he had the audience jammin'. Say what u will about him, he knows from where his dollar is made...and he's not afraid 2 admit it,
"I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley, to do black music so selfishly," - Eminem "Without Me" So, rapping being what it is, RAP, (not singing, lovebird) u gotta give him credit 4 his marketing and intensity in what he's doing. Would I buy it 4 my kids? Hell no! Would I freak if they bought it at age 18 or over? No. But, until then, they r mine, and I'll control what they listen 2 in the house. Afterwards, when they r all "growed up", it's artistic freedom 1st & 4most; music, expression and a part of who they r. I fully support Urs & My right 2 listen 2 what u wanna. As far as marketing goes, I wish Prince would follow his example by adding some cool computer enhancements in the discs he releases...videos, graphics or art...that would b so nice! |

I think Eminem is very talented within his field. He is not just about brash controversy, some of the lyrics on 'The Eminem Show' are very deep and thought-provoking. Eminem's new work displays a sense maturity and a real development as a lyricist and producer.
There is little point however, in comparing Eminem's sales and marketing techniques to Prince's. Prince has been around for over 25 years. In that time he has hit the same sales figures as Eminem. However, Prince is now independent. 'The Rainbow Children' was not promoted by Prince (no interviews, promo cd's, singles, performances etc) and it recieved no major label backing. Prince currently deals with his fans direct through his own music club. Besides, the kind of challenging, complex music Prince is producing now is not intended for massive popular or commercial sucess. Eminem is at the peak of his popularity and has major label funding. Prince has nothing to learn from this as he has already been there.

I didn't compare his sales 2 E, just the marketing with the "extras" added on the disc.
Tell me u wouldn't want some cool graphics or videos included on ur disc? It's well known how Prince has been marketing his music lately, hell, I'm a 2 year member now! But there is never any harm in asking 4 more...worst that can happen is he says "no". Prince? Enhanced CD's? Extras? More? Please? Thank U. |

Yeah, I'm real bitter about Eminem selling millions of CDs, NOT!
And while Purple Rain is Prince's best selling album, it isn't his best musically, in my opinion. To me, quantity doesn't equal quality.

well..at least the album didnt break any worthy records...thats a sign is fan base is shrinking, rather then growing...
and i agree with Icenine here...if Eminem would write the music (rather then sampled), played the instruments (rather then sample) and *then* rap..Maybe I would give him respect...but, he doesnt, he deserves as much credit as all the *white label* DJ's who mix two songs and then release them as their own...IT AINT!!! Bring back *real* music for the love of God!!!

Well, I'm not surprised at how well this album took off. It is a good album, although, he's extremely angry this time - more so than before. I'm looking forward to seeing "8 Mile" and I have a feeling he'll have success with that, too.
