That's a smooth CD cover. "Character" sounds good.
I think "Hot Stage Lights" is interesting, too. Priest or Police has a kick ass bassline and has that Sly Stone feel to it. "Being A Girl" has that "Nasty Girl" drum feel to it. [Edited 3/26/06 22:26pm]

I like the fact that he rocked out a little more this time.

Well, "At the End Of A Slow Dance" seems to be about as "rocked out" as Van got on this record. I hear a little Prince influence in "If I Take You Home" but for the most part, this record is more consistantly soul than his first one. I think I like the first record better...for now at least.

yeah I like it.
He was in ATL twice last week and I missed him both times... from his blog: - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Friday, March 24, 2006 Jay Leno Performance and Tour with Anthony Hamilton With On The Jungle Floor, the follow-up to Van Hunt's Grammy-nominated debut album, scheduled for release on April 4th, the acclaimed singer-songwriter is taking to the airwaves and the road. He'll perform his new single, "Character," on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" (April 7th) and guest on "The Tavis Smiley Show", and KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic." He will then join up with Anthony Hamilton, who's asked him to open on his U.S. tour. Hunt will headline a special show at Los Angeles' Roxy Theatre on April 4th. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Friday, March 17, 2006 no chicken, ribs or coffee-until after April 4th hello, lovely peoples. who was st. patrick anyway?..anybody know?... well, the album comes out april 4th. we're still rehearsing. i took a few days off to change a few things (and, to get my head together). this was the first year that i forgot about my birthday. then, i forgot my father's birthday (a few days after mine). i would've forgotten my mom's birthday, too; but, it's hard to forget that your mother shares a birthday with Sylvester Stewart! so, now it's crunch time. i'm worried that we won't be ready for our first show. i'm worried that ya'll won't like the album (even though i know it's good...that doesn't seem to matter). i do have fleeting moments of over-confidence-like when i'm riding in my car-listening to the new record-when the EQ on the bass and treble is just right. i start thinking "damn, this is better than.....just about anything!" then i go to the coffee shop. i hear some album from the 40's-the beautiful string arrangements, the wonderful melodies and the smoky voices; then, i go to the chicken and rib shack-i hear a bobby bland album from the 60's (before he started spitting)-gnarly guitars, and that trashy room sound on the drums...ferocious! that's when i start to question how i spent my time(and dimes) in the studio. "did i do enough?" but, all in all-paranoia aside-i'm happy. you know what? i can, also, truly say that i'm happy to be happy for someone else. that's not an easy thing to do. even though you hear people say all the time, "awww, i'm so happy for you." for some, it's just something to say. they might WANT to be happy for you. but, they can't...not until they get something going for themselves to be excited about.... well, i'm sure this is more information than anyone wanted. i'm absolutely certain it's more than my record company wants me to share. so, i'll get down to the business of it. i'm going on tour with the dynamic Anthony Hamilton and the sophisticated siren Heather Headley-starting april 6th. these two giants of modern rhythm and blues were gracious enough to allow me to play a few songs in front of their loyal and enthusiastic audience. it sbould be fun. ina few select cities, we will, also, be appearing in our own late-night show called 'midnight violence...or violins'. these shows that one might also call 'extension chords' will be for the hardcore progressives who want to find out just what's under that scarf and hat. and, on a final note, once you've heard the album, let's re-convene. you can tell me what you think about it (remembering to use the softest tones and the sweetest words possible). and, if you have questions, i would love to hear them. ya'll be good. van - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - [Edited 3/27/06 11:50am] "Pedro offers you his protection."

Totally. Among my friends, I root the loudest for Van Hunt. I really want him to succeed. But sometimes, I feel his voice, stage presence and songwriting are indeed a little bland. I don't think he's really a "lead cat" if you know what I mean. I think he's better suited to writing or production - more of a behind the scenes type of musician.

Can't wait to hear this.
I see why some might say his vocals are bland, but there's just something about his phrasing that interests me. The lyrics too. I sing along to VH more than any artist.

I can't get that song out of my head. "Hot Stage Lights" is like Sly meets The Bar Kays. A lot of the songs are like a mixture of two or three different artist that came before. I really love how VH mixes styles on this album. [Edited 3/30/06 9:52am] Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
