I love this topic too! biggrin

Anybody else here a fan of Metamorphosis?

There's some gems on there: Stevie's "I Don't Know Why," (Love that song!) "Jiving Sister Fanny," Downtown Suzie," and a version of "Memo From Turner," although I prefer the one that was released on the Performance soundtrack.

"Some Girls" -I just love the freshness of this one. It sounds so... young, playful... Probably the best soundtrack to the summer of your life. I love the fact that they were getting over a lot of problems (can I say drugs?) and it all sounds like a new start. And the good thing is that there's no hype with that.

Dont get me started on Some Girls...this was the one that brought them back to relevancy after they were sen to have used all their marbles...Miss You was THE song of the summer even if it pissed some of their rock fans off...everyone was blastin it, white black puerto rican ( we gonna come round rpund 12 with soem puerto rican gorkls just dyyyin to meet you, so in other words dont worry..have sex while youre on the rebound)...the cover alone caused lawsuits from Lucille Ball and I think Raquel Welch...the lyrics to Some Girls caused an uproar in some of the black community and Jesse Jackson tried to form a boycott fo the Stones for its lyric about the mythical sexual appetites of black women "black girls just wanna get fuckled all night I just dont have that much jammm"(see old SNL for garret Morris funny Weekend Update report)...basically they went back and pissed everyone off in a return to form. They had becoem the toast of nightlife and lear jets and came back to prove they could still do this. Some Girls album has New York written all over it...Before They Make Me Run a Keith anthem, or any other outlaws anthem...When The Whip Comes Down with Mick being the New York hustler prostitute talking abut him getting his "hole plugged" (shades of Cocksucker Blues!)...Respectable, a diatribe against his soon to be ex-wife Bianca, Beast Of Burden! shit...aint I ruff enuff...aint I tuff enuff?..Shattered, the epitome of New York nightlife...dont mind the maggots...this album is the Stones being sloppy drunk but coherent as fuck. Their last great one.

Sly&the family stone IMHO are the Greatest Rock Band Bar None.Sly did more with rock in 5 years IMHO than The Long-winded Rolling Stones have done in 35.if Sly was white we wouldn't even be having this conversation IMHO.

HEY! ... An expert there!

Yes, there are some awesome moments in there ... even though there's some crappy material mixed in there, too. I recently got to find an original copy on vinyl of that one for just some $ 7.00 smile

When I said there was no hype I meant it wasn't the kinda "We've been gone and now we're back again, remember us?" comeback. I don't think (like some does) that there was nothing wrong with "Black & Blue", "Love You Live" and that "darker" era. They were KILLERS then. Absolute destroyers.

Also, I think that they made some beautiful albums after "Some Girls". I appreciate every single aspect on the Stones. I even love to death "Voodoo Lounge". And I'm not a newcomer!.

That run the Stones had starting in about '68 on thru about '72 is legendary. In the narrow terms of Rock music alone, I don't think their output during that time has to take a back seat to any other Rock group, in terms of quality. Sly & Company weren't a Rock group, per se. Sly was dealing doses of Funk/Rock and psychedelia, sometimes within the same song. And if The Stones had retired after that streak their legend would have been secure. They were less consistent after the early 70s though. I'm afraid Sly being White wouldn't have stopped him from derailing his career.

the stones are easily the greatest rock & roll band of all time... they gave rock music that dark rhythm & blues that it never would've gotten from the beatles...

and what a friggin magnificent streak they were on from "beggar's banquet" to "exile on main street" (including the live "get yer ya yas out")...

i think my 2 alltime favorites have to be "sticky fingers" and "exile"... i think a lot of what makes these albums so great was keith's newfound friendship in gram parsons (flying burrito brothers)... both of these records have gram parsons influence all over them...

few bands ever wrote a greater rocker than "rocks off," or a better ballad than "moonlight mile."... everytime i hear "moonlight mile" i have to hit repeat on the cd player... it's one of those songs that will make me depressed no matter how happy i am... just that powerful...

can't wait for the stones to get down here in atlanta... big grin oh happy happy muthafuckin' day...

Terrifying...yeah.

I hear ya. I never get sick of that song or Honky Tonk Women.

Honkey Tonk Women has one of the best drum beat openings...Charlie is just friggin sick..that cowbell and then such a heavy drum, sort of like Bonham on that one. And the song...Mick meeting a tranvestite whos huggge and overbearing carrying his skinny ass upstairs to do the nasty lol...one of the many rock tunes thats an ode to tranvestites ala Lola etc. Then the at the time nasty line about him "laying a divorcee'".Weve all known these type of girls...at least I have. And the girls say "honky tonk, honky tonk women".

I've seen the Stones four times, being my best experience the last one, at the No Security tour in 1998. Front row at the SMALL stage ... The jam on Midnight Rambler is one of those things that I could never forget.

Nobody is taking away from Sly and Co. But sorry...Sly couldnt keep it together...he had to change his outlook because of pressures from the black community etc...now if he was really rock and rolll he would do what he wanted to do. And yes, maybe his music would have taken and insulated more funk turn on its own withot these pressures but what the Stones did and Sly did in their seminal years are apples and oranges. Mick toyed with satanism, claiming himself to be the devil ( Sympathy for The Devil) on wax and on stage etc...these bands, Sly and The Stones have their own place in rock history and they are opposite ends of the dinner table...a longgg table it is too.

Oh I agree...they had never went away but after living the jet set life in NY etc for the last 5 years they had become what they originally rallied against---th e elite uppercrust of society celebrity big wigs etc. Some Girls was a return to form of thier dirty selves and dirty deeds that they did dirt cheap.

I don't think (like some does) that there was nothing wrong with "Black & Blue", "Love You Live" and that "darker" era. They were KILLERS then. Absolute destroyers.

True but their shows supporting Black and Blue had become more spectacle instead of inspired...Keith was ina drug stupor and on the records he was sleeping and letting others take the reigns that werent even in the band (Preston etc) and I LOVE Black and Blue..it has Memory Motel, their 3rd greatest ballad ever.

Also, I think that they made some beautiful albums after "Some Girls". I appreciate every single aspect on the Stones. I even love to death "Voodoo Lounge". And I'm not a newcomer!.

I love their after Some Girls output as well...Tatoo You is a record that I'd like to fuck and did, period...Steel Wheels has solid songwriting on all and theres not a song on their I dont like ( Rock and a Hard Place is the shit), Almost Hear You Sigh is beautiful...Voodoo Lounge has some duds like Moon Is Up but it is like a stonger Emotional Rescue and stonger Dirty Work (which had a lot of crap but is salvaged by One Hit To The Body, the body, the bodyyy) and it also has the instant classic imho of Love Is Strong which gets no more love by others.. And Bridges is great! How Can I Stop, Gunface, Anybody Seen My Baby, Saint Of Me ( so unbderrated, probably becaue ofthe slick production) are classics in their own right. My point is Some Girls was the last one besides Start Me Up where people were saying all fuckin right! They dont make rock liek that anymore becasue they cant. Time , age etc...

yes, somewhere around the time Voodoo Lounge came out, i think. i also vaguely remember two versions, one in a regular jewel case, and one that replicated the original album packaging in a CD-sized setup.

Virgin has redone all the Stones releases from 1971 (right?) on, the studio albums first, and the live discs a few years later...

The stones? You mean the guys who have covered loads of black music? I guess they are rip off artists like Elvis supposedly is. Right? Quite a few hypocrites here. Same with the beatles. Covered lots of black music. More than Elvis. The stones are a bunch of old farts who haven't made any good music since the 70's.
