Exile on Main Street

I was listening to this album last night and I'm really appreciating the underproduced feel of the music, and the wide ranging musical styles tackled by the Rolling Stones. I have always appreciated the fact that both groups openly site African American musicians as main/major influences from day one, even though American media wanted to hear the names of Frank Sinatra etc. when they asked about their roots and idols. Although I think the Beatles and Rolling Stones are both great bands , I tend to sway moreso to the side of the Stones because I feel that their music has deeper grooves and is a little more soulful than the Beatles. Which group do you prefer???

That streak from say 68-73 was unique and untouchable. I even like 'Tattoo You'. However I wouldn't see them live now if you paid me.

You're almost certainly right! I have an awful habit of making stupid off the cuff remarks which I later come to regret smile

I prefer both at different times. Sometimes I'm in the mood for apples, other times oranges. The Stones loved that Chicago Blues.

Midnight Rambler
Hot Stuff
Monkey Man
Gimme Shelter

I Respect them Both. The Stones along time ago I thought were Good but they have that "Babyface Diease" they have been playing the same song for 20 Years IMHO.I Like the Stones's Grooves especially when they had Billy Preston with them but He also was with the Beatles for a while.that is a Good Tribute.Stones have cooled off with me long ago.as for the Beatles:Great Song-writers after they did the LSD.there early stuff IMHO was as Soft as the Backstreet Boys,etc.. but after 64 they got on the Ball&started matching the Beach Boys with Creativity&Sound IMHO.but it's about them as Composers for me.not much thought on them as Vocalists or as Arrangers.I Respect both Bands but I'm so tired of them being Ranked 1&2 on Every Music All-Time Great Poll.British Cats&then they Give Jimi Hendrix a Token Number 3&He hit it Big over there.so I Feel it's a Bias there.they are Talented but they Blow Up Essentially for taking Black Music&given it a Twist.

I always thought of the Stones and the Beatles like Prince and Michael Jackson. I am more of a Prince and Stones fan cause they are more raw, more about sex, more original and more about the street side of rock and roll. This isn't to take away from the Beatles or Michael J who wrote perfect pop songs and used amazing production techniques. But the problem with the Beatles and MJ was that they get a little too sappy and there's just not enough of that nasty blues, funk and raw soufulness that I think makes Prince and Mick and the Stones the best musicians of all time.

Exile On Main Street is one of the top ten classic records of all time...ya hear me...all fuckin time...its a dirty rock record with Rocks Off and Rip This Joint...its a blues soul album with Let It Loose, its gospel with Just Wanna See His Face and Shine A Light, its country jam with Sweet Virginia,(and I hid the speed inside my shoe...got to wipe that shit right off your shoe) down home blues and rock with Ventilator Blues, more gospel with Shine A Light, rock and soul with Tumblin' Dice!...this album is like I said top ten of all time...it has that sludgy production that was panned back then and now is sought after by many rock producers. Its called Exile On Main Street because the Stones had to record mostly in Paris away from their homes oin England due to high taxes...so in Keiths French mansion in the basement all peope gathered round and recorded...Dr. John, Billy Preston, Ry Cooder, Vanetta and Mrs King as backround vocalists...everyone was eating, recording and living there, commune like. I beg of everyone to listen to or download Let It Loose and listen to a man talking about his best friend getting married, warning him...when them damn Memphis horns enter the song...tears and chills! And my favorite line of all time..."maybe your friends think, Im just a stranger...some face you'll never see no more"..good GAWD when he sings those lines...Mick was in a soulful mood on this record and is in excellent souldman rasped worn voice. They even wrote Sweet Black Angel for Angela Davis...Please I beg of you...this record is ESSENTIAL.

Im a die hard Stones fans not only for the music but for the image and essence...although I have been more and more into the Beatles as of late--I think I was born too late. I grew up hearing both bands tunes in the background of my life...I cold never choose one over the other..thats like saying which would u do without, Stevie or Marvyn. Just as oppsoite that Prince could never be in the same room with Axl Rose alone, these two bands ( as well a Stevie and Marvyn) need to exist with each other.

LET IT LOOSE
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Who's that woman on your arm all dressed up to do you harm
And I'm hip to what she'll do, give her just about a month or two.
Bit off more than I can chew and I knew what it was leading to,
Some things, well, I can't refuse,
One of them, one of them the bedroom blues.
She delivers right on time, I can't resist a corny line,
But take the shine right off you shoes,
Carryin', carryin' the bedroom blues.
Oo...

In the bar you're getting drunk, I ain't in love, I ain't in luck.
Hide the switch and shut the light, let it all come down tonight.
Maybe your friends think I'm just a stranger,
Some face you'll never see no more.

Let it all come down tonight.
Keep those tears hid out of sight, let it loose, let it all come down
"Climb in my fur."

Heres a song they wrote about me--who knew they could tell the future:

TUMBLING DICE
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Wo Yeah! (Wo, wo)

Women think I'm tasty, but they're always tryin' to waste me
And make me burn the candle right down,
But baby, baby, I don't need no jewels in my crown.

'Cause all you women is low down gamblers,
Cheatin' like I don't know how,
But baby, baby, there's fever in the funk house now.
This low down bitchin' got my poor feet a itchin',
Don't you know you know the duece is still wild.

Baby, I can't stay, you got to roll me
And call me the tumblin' dice.

Always in a hurry, I never stop to worry,
Don't you see the time flashin' by.
Honey, got no money,
I'm all sixes and sevens and nines.
Say now baby, I'm the rank outsider,
You can be my partner in crime.

But baby, I can't stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin',
Roll me and call me the tumblin' dice.

Oh, my, my, my, I'm the lone crap shooter,
Playin' the field ev'ry night.

But baby, I can't stay,
You got to roll me and call me the tumblin' dice, (Call me the tumblin')
Got to roll me (yayes), Got to roll me, Got to roll me (Oh yeah)
Got to roll me
Got to roll me (yeah)
Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)
Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)
Got to roll me (Keep on rolling)
Got to roll me
My baby, call me the tumblin' dice, yeah
Got to roll me
Baby sweet as sugar (Got to roll me)
Yeah, my, my, my yeah (Got to roll me)
I went down baby, oh
Got to roll me (hit me)
Baby I'm down
"Climb in my fur."

Gimme Shelter---there isnt a more ominous opening in a rock song Im sorry--the whole thing sounds like the world is ending--its the song of the apocalypse imho. Its a warning..they say war is just a shot away and back then it was..one bullet in the right place caused riots in the streets etc...and love being a kiss away is fitting too...how fitting that it can be used for today as well. And the vocals..Mary Clayton is wailing something fierce...and when the song kicks in right after the scary "ooo ooo ooh"s...talk a bout rythm that makes you wanna hide.

I saw a Red Cross commercial a few years ago with the "Gimme Shelter" intro, it was perfect. Haunting. Unlike "Start Me Up" for Microsoft, at least the Red Cross is a good cause.

Merry (yep, she spells it that way) Clayton is the seasoning that that song needed. Perfect.

I've got chills just reading all that. Another Stones die-hard, SERIOUS FAN here!

Exile On Main St. is certainly one of the mighty best albums in Human History. But please let me name a few other fav moments on the Stones discography:

"Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" -Can't get enough of that! I always thought I'd always give away my whole life just to witness front-row one of those late 60's gigs. ...Yeah, some might say the Stones got better on later tours, but it's all about the feel. Mmmh...

"Some Girls" -I just love the freshness of this one. It sounds so... young, playful... Probably the best soundtrack to the summer of your life. I love the fact that they were getting over a lot of problems (can I say drugs?) and it all sounds like a new start. And the good thing is that there's no hype with that.

I could go on with a few more LPs, but these two, along with "Exile", are my favorite Stones' moments in History. Can't wait for the new tour smile

Props to rdhull !!!
