Nah, they wern't a band really. I mean, sure jermaine strums a bass, but he sure didn't play on any of those motown records did he? Same with tito. Infact, even on the later jacksons records, it credited tito and some other dude on guitar (proberly lukather).

Jackie can do some mean handclaps though.

Trust me when I say I'm not being facetious, but I would really like it explained to me exactly what made J5 a "real" band versus a boyband.

Let me break what I see of this down:

A group of cute young guys.
That sings.
That dances.
That wears matching outfits.
That only occasionally plays instruments/writes songs/produces, and at that not even 50% of the time do their names appear in the credits as having done so.
That is marketed the hell out of to who? Little girls and their parents.
That is merchandised with damn near every product you can think of.

Don't get me wrong, I love J5, but how were they not a boyband?

Nicely said, but I think funkpill meant "not just a boy band at all" in the spiritual/figurative sense as opposed to the literal/technical one.

EDIT: OR maybe not, I don't know. shrug

well one of the reasons they left motown was because motown didnt want jacksons to write their own songs and play their instruments.
album destiny is played all by jacksons .
i heard 2 live shows by the jacksons where everybody plays instruments beside michael and jackie.
tito is very good guitar player, but he is not flashy,80-s wanted pyrotehnic guitar players so when they wanted that sound they hired guest guitar player ,tito was more about blues.
jeremain jackson is great funk bass player.
jacksons wer great live funk band.

A) Of course theyhad some intense talent. So do choice members of certain groups widely considered boybands.

B) Hanson and The Moffats play instruments, and Boy-played instruments make appearances on Backstreet Boys albums and live in concert. So your point is?
