Michael Jackson and Sonic the Hedgehog

from a engineer who worked on sonic 3:

Which of those was your favorite project?

RH: Sonic 3 (also called Sonic & Knuckles) was a lot of fun, but it was also very difficult. Michael Jackson was originally brought in to compose all the music for the game, but at the very end, his work was dropped after his scandals became public. This caused a lot of problems and required a lot of reworking. But the game turned out

Damn, as a huge lover of sonic music, mike woulda got kudo's from kids back then, if the music got out.

I know, its geeky, but hey, sonic is funky and iam a big fan.

And it does sound like "stranger in moscow", as this kid found out below,

holy moley, ur right. That keyboard riff, is straight outta one of those early 90's sonic games.

Did u see the youtube clip? Whoever found those tiny little examples, musta had alot of time on his hands. Also, if u have the re-release of the series (mega collection on the ps2), i think they took all the MJ related tunes out.

So, stranger in moscow was written for sonic.

The 1993 scandal not only fucked up the sonic thing, but also the addams family values soundtrack and the US dangerous tour. Shit.

It's clutching at straws a bit if you ask me. Funny the the one that sounds most like it is Stranger In Moscow, when that was only written in late 1993 so couldn't have ever been submitted.

I know it is clutching at straws, but u know, mike coulda had the tune down earlier Ur prolly right though, the dates may be wrong, but as that song was not known 'till 1995, why is the melody at the end of a game released in 1993?

Mike loves beatboxing, so i can see why he would do the "score" to sonic 3. All the tunes in those early sonic games u can beatbox to death too.

First of all the back and forth between thesexofit and Ellie made this thread worth it already. I saw this at MJNO and watched the program. I would have loved to have heard Michael's music that he composed for the video game, because I imagine there were some orignals.

As thesexofit pointed out, the 93 shit really screwed up lots of Michael's business plans. I would have LOOOOOVED to have seen Michael's Dangerous tour in the US. (And it probably would have happened to, given his past tour history, each of his tours before the Dangerous tour came to USA.)

Damn you Sneddon.... mad mad mad mad mad mad mad mad

I canNOT hear the similarity to "Who Is It" disbelief

Once you've studied a bit of theory, it's easy to find songs with similar chord progressions.

But actually that one end song did sound like "Stranger In Moscow"

Thanks for posting this. I didn't hear "Jam" until they played that breakdown that precedes Heavy D's rap.

But still, that Stranger In Moscow could have been written in time for that game!

I loved the sped up "Who is it.."

It really would have been great for his career if he did those Sonic tracks...

I don't think so myself. He was hardly submitting songs to anyone back then. He wrote it in his hotel room in late 1993. I just doubt he ever recorded it or played it to anyone for a while. I mean, since he's admitted it's his most personal and autobiographical song, it doesn't seem like the sort of thing he'd chuck at Sega considering what he was going through at the time.

While I would agree, I would disagree also. Michael is really heavy on a belief that being commercial is VERY important. Hence, the LA Gear shoes and other tie ins along the way. Would you like a glass of Pepsi with your post? biggrin

Yeah, like I said I agree but I don't agree. With Michael, for me, one of the most interesting things about him is, you never know if he puts being commercial above being "artistic" (for lack of a better word.) Now I realize when you put Michael next to someone like Prince, he comes up looking like BIG time commercial only guy. However, I think on his own terms there is this constant struggle between being or remaining artistic but also having your albums be the biggest thing since sliced bread. I imagine while "Thriller" was probably the best thing that happened to his career in terms of sales and all that, it was also the worst. While Michael clearly has tried and can't cope with chasing "Thriller" I seriously doubt anyone could.

INTERESTING

I knew that long time Jackson colloborator, Brad Buxer, was credited with composing the music for the game along with other musicians who have worked with MJ in the past.

go type in 'sonic' 'michael jackson' in youtube. you'll find a short documentary on this very subject. I seem to recall remnants of 'Jam' and 'Stranger In Moscow' still ended up featuring in sonic3.

I hear MJ in that "Stranger In Moscow" exit theme.

But other than that... only the stages that have the snare hits accented with "hoo! hoo! hoo!" really make me wonder.
