The New MORRISSEY Single...

biggrin Hey everyone- just got back from HMV with the new Morrissey single, which is great..."You Have Killed Me"- you may of already heard it!?
But the B-sides are even better- CD 1 has "Good Looking Man About Town" which sounds like Morrissey doing a Bowie 'Aladdin Sane' track remixed by The Chemical Brothers!?!...it really is that special.
Plus on CD2 there is an actual cover version of Morrissey doing The New York Dolls "Human Being", which is fantastically noisey with mad piano and the weirdest sound effects.
The third track is slightly typical Moz B-side material, but still better than most, called "I Knew I Was Next"- it carries the same out of control piano from the previous track and strangles it to fine effect.
Just everyone go out and buy both formats for a strange afternoon of Moz music.
And be prepared for next weeks release of the new album!!!!
Steven.
P.s. I'm also loving "3121" to bits!!!

The entire album is pretty good. It's being touted as his best since the smiths, but I still prefer bona drag and kill uncle.

Hey there- I'm glad that someone likes Kill Uncle, it's a fantastic album- it kinda creeps into your brain and quietly takes over,
plus "There is a place..." has to be one of his best vocal performances- brings a tear to the eye.

4)Your Arsenal
5)Bona Drag
6)Ringleader Of The Tormentors
7)Viva Hate
8)Beethoven Was Deaf
9)Maladjusted
10)Live At Earls Court

But certainly not "Kill Unkle"!

I have only heard the single itself a few times, on the radio. It's growing on me. The bsides sound exciting though!

I'm going to a release party this Wed for the album, so I'm stuper jazzed for that.

sad I think "Kill Uncle" gets a really hard time. I think it got lost in what was happening in 90's music, and so people see it as a failure.
Tracks like "Found Found Found" "There Is A Place..." and "Mute Witness" have fantastic melodies and lyrics and along with the potitical words of "Asian Rut" that cannot be attached to a bad album.
Sure the lyrics are a bit hum-drum and slight- but they have a very 70's vibe to them- I don't mean in the music sense, but in that they remind you of being younger...your sisters boyfriends, scarey clothes and the normality of life before mobile phones and the internet happened!
I love listening to this album on a Sunday just after listening to Kate Bush's "Lionheart" album- perfect!

Yeah Kill Uncle is drab and grey positioned between those two. Some good moments though. I'd place ROTT third, behind Your Arsenal and Vauxhall, just in front of Viva Hate and the underrated Southpaw Grammar.

I haven't listened to any of The Smiths works, but I do know that "The Queen Is Dead" is held in very high regard.

Think I could start out with an album like that, or should I take a few baby steps before I get there?

That would be a great place to start. But if you want a full overview, you can't go wrong with "Singles" and "Best of Morrissey".

It's probably best to start with the Smiths first album to see where it all started- the album is pretty raw, then move through their catalogue- to really feel the progression of the band.
The same with Morrissey, start with Viva Hate then onwards.
People seem to give the solo albums a really hard time- but that's just because of what had come before with the Smiths.
I've been a fan since day one and tend to play more of the solo work- it a lot warmer. I still play the Smiths, but it tends to take me backwards instead of forwards...?

It´s easy. Start with The Smiths. I recommed starting with their third album and masterpiece "The Queen Is Dead" (1986). You should love the song "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" on this album. Always take a good listen to the lyrics which are as important as the music itself. Next, buy their second album "Meat Is Murder" (1985), their fourth and last album "Strangeways, Here We Come" (1987) or the radio-session and b-sides compilation "Hatful Of Hollow" (1984). Nearly all of The Smiths' b-sides are as good as the (non-album) Singles and the albums. Therefore, buy the singles and b-sides compilation "Louder Than Bombs" (1986) before you move on to Morrissey. Oh, you might as well buy the debut-album "The Smiths" (1983) before you do this. Just avoid any Smiths "Best Of"-collection.

A good way to get into Morrissey is his first solo-album "Viva Hate" (1988), his fourth solo-album "Vauxhall & I" (1994) or his 2004 comeback "You Are The Quarry". If you like those, buy the heavier-sounding "Your Arsenal" (1992), the live-album "Beethoven Was Deaf" (1993) and the experimental and heavy "Southpaw Grammar" (1996). Last but not least, listen to the singles and b-sides compilation "Bona Drag" (1990) and his 1997 album "Maladjusted". Avoid "Kill Unkle", though there are three nice songs on it ("There Is A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends", "Driving Your Girlfriend Home" and "Sing Your Life").

I envy you. I would like to discover all of this once more.

Thanx. I´ve heard "Ringleader Of The Tormentors". It´s great, though it took me some time to get into it. I´m going to see him live in two weeks. Can´t wait to hear "Still Ill" live.

Set to be denied his first ever number one...

Crazy downloads propel Barkley to top of chart
28 March 2006 - 11:14:42

The recent change in singles chart rules concerning the inclusion of downloads continues to break new ground this week, with Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy (Warner Bros) looking on course to enter at number one, based on digital sales alone for the first time in chart history.

Early retail reports suggest the single, which gets its physical release next Monday, will deny Morrissey his first number one after comfortably outselling his Attack/Sanctuary-released You Have Killed Me yesterday.

Crazy, which has been at the top of the iTunes download chart for some time, would also have made the top three last week if digital sales had counted towards chart places that far in advance.
