When she sang about Respect for the first time in 1967, Aretha Franklin was a svelte brunette. Forty years on, she is almost unrecognisable.

In a blonde wig, spilling out of a low-cut gown, a much larger Queen of Soul appeared at a gala dinner in Washington on Friday.

And Miss Franklin couldn't be happier. For the first time, she says, the real Aretha is on stage - a 'big woman' who loves her food.

The 63-year-old has revealed she spent decades starving herself to stay slim.

'For a long time I suffered so much trying to be what other people expected me to be and look like,' she told the Canyon News website.

'I definitely was never meant to be a model-type walking down a runway - I'm just Aretha singing what she feels in her heart and soul. So far, people seem to understand...'

The audience at the National Association of Black-Owned Broadcasters gala dinner certainly seemed satisfied, giving the mother of four a standing ovation.

It's great that Aretha is super confident and doesn't care what others think.She's at peace with herself.But,it is extremely unhealthy to be that overweight,and I really wish she would take it seriously.I'm not saying she should try to go down to a size four (lol),but it wouldn't hurt to cut down on the sweet potato pies

It would do Aretha a lot of good to lose weight. No one should be as big as she is. If she wants to live to a ripe old age, she better try to drop at least 60-80 lbs.

well she didn't start gaining weight until she quick smoking in the 80's i think. Although i don't like people talking about "fat" people and stuff like that, i do agree that she does need to lose some weight. Maybe she will follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Holiday, Star Jones, or even Oprah..who knows...

My mother has gotten to the same point in her life where she just doesn't give a shit about her weight and overeats and gained too much weight.
It's heartbreaking just to see someone let go just for the sake of it, or because they're older and they feel there's no point anymore.
