What bands have The Smiths influenced?

And what bands or poets influenced The Smiths?

Does Morrissey read poetry? Who are his faves?

I think Moz's favorite band is the New York Dolls.

The Dears seem to be the most obvious one. That lead singer sounds just like Morrissey to me.

Suede, Libertines stuff like that are the influenced I guess.

Not so much bands were the influences as 60s pop singles and glam bands like early T-Rex, New York Dolls and Bowie.

Poetry mainly Oscar Wilde and Shelagh Delaney.

Yeah I meant dodgy 60s girl icons in "60s pop singles", I actually don't like much of the music Morrissey is influenced by or the bands influenced by The Smiths either for that matter. biggrin

My sister asked me to remix a Dears song for her so she didn't have to hear the singer. confused I never did it. I'm like, why, it sounds good?

hmmm I think there might be a bit of Charles Baudelaire in there.

Those dark french poets. Maybe Rimbaud too...

I can't remember offhand. But there was this great website that went into detail about the sources of Moz's inspiration. I'll try to dig it up.

i doubt rimbaud..lord byron..if you look closely at the book's he's reading in the suedehead video..also in a interview he saids to be a fan of emily bronte especially "wuthering heights".
also Nancy Friday..musically he's saids the glam rock scene was inspiring more or so david bowie,t.rex, roxy music, jobriath, new york dolls..Sandie Shaw And The Shangri-La's..sappusly according to Marr(smiths guitarist i believe) he had a thing for 60's girl pop groups..

I'm having a hard time imagining how 60's girl groups influenced his sound. Did they have an influence, or is he just a fan?

Yeah, but you can easily hear the bubblegum, surf and girl group influence on The Ramones sound. It's not so obvious with Morrissey.

er...I read what you said, and you were not the first to say it. So maybe you need to read the thread a bit more slowly... lol

When three people mention 60's girls groups and the question is "what bands influenced The Smiths?", I am assuming they are directing their answers to the question...

LOL

Some random googling:

From Oscar:

Today (4/12) I was driving to school listening to KROQ Los Angeles and No Doubt was being interviewed. When a caller asked who had influenced their music they all said British punk bands, they mention the Cure, Depeche Mode and the caller asked "Morrissey?" The singer (Gwen Stefani) said, "Yes I love Morrissey."

From Asif Husain:

No Doubt were on the KROQ Kevin & Bean show and when asked their influences they emphasised their love for Morrissey and The Smiths. I believe Tony Kanal even called Moz brilliant.

Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, hours after playing with Johnny Marr at a Neil Finn concert in New Zealand in 2001, said The Smiths' guitarist was the reason he had picked up a guitar as a teenager.

The excerpt of "Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty" which opens The Queen is Dead is taken from The L Shaped Room.
