It's uptempo, but the snares aren't hitting very hard. For that reason, I wouldn't recommend this to vainandy.

True, the snares aren't hitting hard enough, but everything else about the song is HOT. That curious synth hook, that dazzling '80s-fied chorus, Timbo's presence.. aww, yeah.

I like "Maneater", too.

Timbaland is really not that great of a beat-maker. He's just minimal and that's what attracts, but he's not anything special AT ALL musically.

NOTHING else sounded like that in R&B/hip-hop.

Timberland has most likely been searching for a muse ever since Aaliyah died and I think he's found one in Nelly Furtado. The bonus; she has ideas of her own.

Nelly Furtado Behaves Like A Loose Woman

At the end of this month, Canadian songbird Nelly Furtado re-emerges with Loose, her first album since 2003's Folklore. Shifting gears from Folklore's sombre, message-driven songs, Furtado teamed up with hip-hop mastermind Timbaland for Loose, which is her first full-fledged attempt at an urban music album. ChartAttack caught up with Furtado to talk about the new album and her sexy new image.



ChartAttack: Especially after the serious tone of Folklore, this album is a huge change for you. Why go for such a departure?
Nelly Furtado: I really like the album. It just feels right, you know. That's why I called it Loose, because I always wanted to do something a little more laid-back. Sonically I just get fed up with the same sound. I loved my first two albums as well, but they had a really pristine sound. And this new record is very rough around the edges. Ironically, it's very influenced by rock music. You can't totally hear it, but it's more the approach we took sonically with it — very loud.

It does sound like you're having a lot of fun, but it's intense too. You sound fierce.
I'm glad, because the content is definitely more sexual than the past few records. It's more sensual. It's not overt, but it's very human. And I think I'm showing another side of myself. But the side I'm showing on the record was always very present in my live shows in certain songs. In my shows we'd tend to rock out and that's definitely another side to what I do. And when I work with Timbaland he pulls out that side. Just the chemistry between us — I call it the dark side of me, but not dark as in negative. It's just that everyone has a combination of light and dark in them. It's kind of that powerful, more mystical side of me.

There are snippets of studio dialogue between the songs and it gives the sense that you and Timbaland are having a lot of fun. I think that balances out the aggression of some of those first few songs.
It does balance the music a little bit. That's the thing, I didn't want it to be too serious because I'm just not in that kind of mood right now. We enjoyed ourselves so much that it almost wouldn't do the listener justice if we didn't include the skits because the engineer recorded everything we did. He recorded us when we were talking and he would catch us and we'd be like, "Oh my god, you taped that?" And we'd be saying some crazy stuff. So that was what he did the whole session. I always wanted to call this record Loose and then it just all of a sudden made sense. Kind of taking the mystery out of music-making, you know? You know that reality TV is so popular, so why not reality CD?

You've always been hip-hop friendly, but this is by far the most urban sounding music you've made. Why such a genre-specific sound?
It's just like another side of me trying to always mash cultures together. It's just like I'm obsessed with culture in general. And when I immerse myself in something, I like to fully immerse myself. In Miami with Tim, I let myself become overwhelmed with the beats and absorbed in more urban culture. The album reminds me of when I was 14 and me and my friends, all we listened to was hip-hop and R&B. It became a lifestyle thing where everything's good and dandy and rock music is the devil. I didn't start listening to rock music until I was 17 and I experienced my first depression. When I was finishing high school, I was depressed and I finally went through this "woe is me" bullshit phase and started listening to Radiohead and The Verve. But before that it was all bubblegum and roses and it was Salt ‘N' Pepa and Bell Biv Devoe and TLC and all those groups. This album kind of reflects that. I never thought I could capture that naive thing again, but I'm happy I did on this album.

You seem to have grown up a lot since the last album. Now you seem to be telling us who you are rather than wondering who you are.
You know, you're totally right, because on the first record, the whole thing is wondering who I am. The naiveness on my first album was a naiveness of "I don't know who I am, but I'm going to pretend I do" in the lyrical content. And it was a good thing, the music sounded good, but I almost had an armor on — me against the world, like I'm going to act really tough so you'll think I'm tough. Like what you'd write in your journal. And some of those songs I wrote when I was 17, so if you think about it, that's 10 years that have passed. And I've changed. I'm definitely more confident.
