Is "FUNK" a legitimate form of music?

Someone asked me the other day what is my favorite type of music and I said "soul, funk, rock and jazz." They was like "what is funk?" Now, I'm only 25 and the person I was talking to is like maybe 23. He had NO CLUE what funk music is. My question is this. Do yall feel that there is any relevance in funk music for today's music? A lot of people always say "that sounds funky" or "its not funky enough." Is "funk" even relevant anymore? To me, it ALWAYS will be but in the grand scheme of things, do you think funk music is relevant. Why or why not?

Funk is not only legitimate, it's the best! Think about how much funk has influenced hiphop and modern rock, funk is the backbone to a lot of commercialized stuff nowadays and many people don't realise. Consider Britney's "Slave 4 U" being a blatant rip of "Nasty Girl", and the majority of West Coast hiphop containing P-Funk and Zapp samples.

Funk has been one of the most influencial genres ever.

If your friend is around 23, funk was already extinct by the time he was old enough to listen to music. Every blue moon someone might do a funky song but the only trace of funk left is in samples. Most of the time, it's no longer funky when it's sampled because the tempo of the song has been slowed down enough for someone who isn't talented enough, even as a rapper, to rap over something fast.

True in a lot of cases, but not all. Also it encourages people to go and find the original record that was sampled. Well, not everyone, but it does for me most of the time (if I didn't already recognize the sample)

The only thing I like about these people sampling, is that it gets people to thinking about the old groups and some of them start touring again. That way, I get to have at least one night of fun in this dead day and age. lol

Funk's not completely gone. On Rainbow Children, aside from the lyrics, 1+1+1=3 is indeed a funky song. The bass on Everlasting Now is pretty out there, too.

That's true. Funk was placed in the ground years ago but Prince has been the one that's stopping them from throwing dirt on top of it and burying it.

Hell yeah, Funk is relevant! biggrin

As far as I'm concern, THIS genre is responsible for a lot of people (like myself) the take the Bass & the Drum parts way more seriously.

'Funk' and 'funky' is a mis-used term in England. it's used to describe anything from eateries to clothing. the true meaning of funk is lost here. I'm constantly educating dim-witted fuckheads.
